Washington Capitals icon Alex Ovechkin will soon have his story told in a new way, not on the ice, but on the screen. The veteran winger is set to be the subject of an upcoming documentary, produced through a partnership with Russian tech giant Yandex and its streaming arm, Kinopoisk.

The project was announced Tuesday, confirming that Yandex’s in-house team, Plus Studio, secured the rights to bring Ovechkin’s NHL journey to life. Whether it’s a film or a series, the adaptation is expected to be filmed across North America and take a deep dive into the hockey legend’s path, from his early days in Moscow to rewriting NHL history books.
Although there’s no official release date yet, the documentary is likely to hit screens sometime after the 2025–26 season, which is also the final year of Ovechkin’s current contract with the Capitals.
After breaking Wayne Gretzky’s goal record with number 895 this past season, Ovechkin is once again at the center of attention. Even a fractured leg didn’t slow him down; he still put up 44 goals in just 65 games.
Now at age 39, the Capitals captain is preparing for what could be his final season in the league. While he hasn’t made a definitive announcement about retirement, the timing of this documentary deal has added to the speculation.
Ovechkin’s film will trace his ascent from the Russian KHL to his enduring legacy in the NHL. Drafted first overall in 2004 and debuting a year later, he’s been a one-team player ever since. His leadership has been constant, as captain since 2010, and his crowning achievement came in 2018, when he helped the Capitals win their first Stanley Cup.
