The Edmonton Oilers may be considering a new face in net as training camp draws closer. According to multiple reports, Boston Bruins goaltender Michael DiPietro has emerged as a possible target for Edmonton.
The 26-year-old from Windsor, Ontario, is viewed by analysts as a cost-effecttive option who could add depth to a position that has been under scrutiny.
Edmonton Oilers Weigh Goalie Options Ahead of Training Camp
The Oilers finished last season strong but still faced questions about goaltending consistency. Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard carried the load, yet the lack of reliability at key moments became a talking point.
With a new season ahead, management appears to be weighing whether internal competition or an outside addition would best address the concern. A player like DiPietro fits the description of a “logical target,” especially if he becomes available via waivers or trade.
DiPietro signed a two-year contract extension with the Bruins earlier this offseason, worth $1.625 million. However, with Jeremy Swayman and Joonas Korpisalo ahead of him, Boston’s crease is crowded.
If he slips onto waivers, there’s a chance Edmonton could make a claim, though a trade is more likely.
The Oilers’ situation makes such a move plausible. Failing that, management may rely on internal solutions with Tomkins, Jonsson, Ungar, and Day filling out various roles. Yet observers note that DiPietro’s strong numbers in the AHL, including a .927 save percentage across 50 games last year, give him an edge as someone worth the gamble.
Oilers Trade History Suggests Possible Action
Last summer, the Oilers were active late in the offseason. They acquired Vasily Podkolzin and Ty Emberson through August trades, moves that shored up roster depth. New general manager Stan Bowman also dipped into the waiver wire, landing Kasperi Kapanen and Alec Regula. That track record makes it reasonable to suggest another late move could be coming.
DiPietro is not without risk. He has just three NHL games on his resume, none since 2022, and his numbers in that small sample were far from impressive. Still, scouts point to his consistent AHL success as proof that he deserves another chance.
For the Oilers, bringing him in could create competition for Pickard, while giving Skinner added motivation to cement his starting role.
At this point, Edmonton has not signaled an aggressive push for a new goalie. The market is inflated, with recent trades such as John Gibson’s move to Detroit highlighting high prices for established starters. That makes a low-risk addition like DiPietro more appealing.
