One name that has made its way around trade circles this offseason is veteran defender Dougie Hamilton of the New Jersey Devils. New Jersey has been looking around the league for a potential trade as the team tries to reshape the salary books for the future.
NHL insider James Murphy of RG reported that there have been a few teams to check in on the availability of Hamilton this summer. Hamilton is still a serviceable player, and the Devils could likely land some strong future assets for the future defender.
“Teams are calling on [Hamilton] now,” an NHL executive source told Murphy. “I heard the Leafs looked into him. They’re looking into multiple options for their blue line, and a lot of them have offensive flair. That’s their strength, so there’s a common thread with their trade targets right now, and Hamilton fits the bill.
“The Stars, Red Wings, and Mammoth have also been pushing hard to acquire a right-shot defenseman that can bolster their offense and improve their power play, so they make a ton of sense.”
With teams looking into a deal, the Devils could eventually pull the trigger. But the biggest obstacle for any team is likely his contract, as Hamilton is on the books for a few more seasons.
Hamilton still has three more seasons on the books, and he is scheduled to make $9 million each year. This could cause some teams to hesitate in adding him to the mix, but if the Devils were to eat some of the salary, then a trade could be done.
This is a prediction, NOT a report!

Utah Mammoth Trade for Dougie Hamilton
The Utah Mammoth is one of the teams that has checked in with New Jersey on a Hamilton trade, and they make a lot of sense as a landing spot. The Mammoth is looking to win over the fans, and this could be a move to help the cause.
The Mammoth have already traded for star JJ Peterka this offseason, and adding Hamilton could help this team compete even more. Utah showed a lot of promise last season, and they are a team that many around hockey expect to make a playoff run next season.
Utah has wanted to add more offensive production from the defenseman spot, and Hamilton could serve them well. Last season with the Devils, Hamilton put up nine goals and 31 assists over 64 regular-season games played.
The Mammoth brought in veteran Nate Schmidt to help bolster the defense, but he won’t provide an offensive punch like Hamilton. Utah has to keep pace in a loaded Western Conference, and adding more offense could make a massive difference.
The team has the pieces that New Jersey would likely covet in any trade deal, and the front office should absolutely look into this potential acquisition. Utah is right on the cusp of real Stanley Cup contention, and bringing in a veteran like Hamilton could help take them over the top.
