BOSTON — The already shorthanded Bruins lost another forward late in the second period in Thursday’s game against the Islanders at TD Garden.

Matt Poitras had to leave the game with 1:36 left in the second period. Brock Nelson was lining up to hit the Bruins’ 20-year-old center in front of the Islanders bench. But with New York changing lines, backup goalie Jakub Skarek opened the door at the far end of the bench for a departing player.

But instead of checking Poitras into the flat boards, Nelson drove him into the corner of the open gap in the boards, which appeared to dig into Poitras’ leg.

He fell to the ice, stopping play as the Bruins medical staff came out to attend to him. When he got to his feet, Poitras did even go to the Boston bench. He left the arena area down the Islanders’ tunnel instead.

He didn’t return for the third period. The Bruins posted:

“UPDATE: Matt Poitras (lower-body) is unlikely to return to tonight’s game.”

Boston is already missing Trent Frederic, who was injured on Tuesday and defensemen Charlie McAvoy and Hampus Lindholm.
