Fan Vote Confirms Worst Trade in Maple Leafs History, and the Result May Surprise You

The Toronto Maple Leafs have had a pretty rough history when it comes to trades backfiring, but fans have recently confirmed the worst trade in history.

With less than one week left in the month of August, I’m sure we’re all looking forward to the calendar flipping to the month of September when training camps commence and pre-season hockey begins. Until then, we need to pass the time.

The Leafs Nation has been spending this time polling NHL fans to seek answers to questions like “who is the best Maple Leafs coach of all-time?”, and “what is the Maple Leafs’ all-time best trade?”.

While recency bias might suggest that the trade that saw Nazem Kadri moved for the now-retired Tyson Barrie is the worst Leafs trade of all-time, the fans do not believe that to be the case. Instead, the award goes to Tuukka Rask for Andrew Raycroft.At the time of the deal, a rookie Rask was viewed as nothing more than a bag of magic beans. He could have turned into a star, he could have toiled in mediocrity, or he could have faded away into obscurity. Meanwhile, Raycroft had the makings of a potential star goaltender. Oh, how history unfolded.In the end, Rask became one of the NHL’s elite goaltenders, posting 308 career wins in 564 games and winning a Stanley Cup and a Vezina Trophy in Boston, while Raycroft trended in the opposite direction, spending less than 2 seasons in Toronto and ultimately washing out of the NHL in 2012 after playing less than 300 career NHL games.

While the Kadri deal certainly wasn’t a good one, it pales in comparison to the Rask for Raycroft deal in the eyes of the fans, and justifiably so.
