The Toronto Maple Leafs shared a special message on their social accounts on Monday afternoon for former defenseman Tyson Barrie after he announced his retirement.
Barrie was seen by the former management group as a way to add more offense to the blueline to lessen the burden on Morgan Rielly as he was coming off of a 59-point season with the Colorado Avalanche.
Unfortunately, Barrie’s only season in Toronto was far from what they had envisioned as he struggled mightily under Mike Babcock before he was fired and replaced with Sheldon Keefe.
Barrie’s season under Keefe did turn around as he finished with 39 points in 70 games, but come July 1st, the Victoria, BC native headed closer to home and joined the Edmonton Oilers.
Following his Monday morning retirement announcement, the Maple Leafs took to their social media pages, posting a special message for the Barrie, congratulating him on a successful 14-year career.
Before calling it a career on Monday, Barrie spent last season with the Calgary Flames, but only skated in 13 games. Over 822 regular season games, Barrie tallied 110 goals, 398 assists and 508 points. He also contributed 21 points in 47 career playoff games.
