Loss leaves Timmins Rock with 1-1 record after opening day action

COLLINGWOOD — The Timmins Rock dropped to 1-1 at 2025 Terry Geddes Cottage Cup after falling 7-1 to the host Blues at the Eddie Bush Memorial Arena Tuesday evening.

Earlier in the day, the Rock opened the tournament with a 5-2 win over the NOJHL-rival Powassan Voodoos.

The Ontario Junior Hockey League Blues took a 6-0 lead in the first period of the contest and then cruised to their victory.

Brody Coe got the Blues on the scoreboard 56 seconds into the contest when he beat Rock goalie Ayden Mullen.

Easton Andrews, Carson McGurn, Ewan McChesney, Nathan Omeri and Gunner Kirk added to the Collingwood advantage before the buzzer sounded to end the frame.

The Rock got on the scoreboard late in the second period, with Ryan Power, who spent the 2024-25 campaign with the ALLIANCE U16’s Cambridge Redhawks, netting the marker.

Kirk’s second goal of the game rounded out the scoring, leaving the final 7-1 in favour of the Blues.

Hudson Ciccerelli went the distance in net for the Blues, stopping 11 of the 12 shots the Rock directed his way, to earn the victory.

Under the tournament format, teams play only two periods not the traditional three.

Mullen, who turned aside 23 of the 30 shots he faced, was tagged with the loss.

The Rock opened the tournament with a 5-2 win over the Powassan Voodoos, Tuesday afternoon.

Philippe Lafontaine, a Timmins product who played for the Great North U18 League’s North Bay U16 Trappers in 2024-25, scored a goal and set up another to help propel the Rock to their initial victory of the 2025 exhibition campaign.

Travis Poan got the Rock rolling when he netted a first-period power-play marker 3:04 into the contest.

The Voodoos got back on even terms a minute and a half later courtesy of Heath Bradley’s even-strength marker.

Owen Head, who toiled for the North Bay U18 Trappers in 2024-25, then netted then put the Rock back in front 2-1, with Lafontaine earning an assist.

Thomas Beard then added what would prove to be the game-winning goal just past the midway point in the opening period.

Lafontaine then netted Timmins second power-play marker to increase the Rock lead to 4-1 with just over two minutes remaining on the clock in the opening frame.

Blue-liner Braedyn Cyr then closed out the scoring in the period when he scored with five seconds remaining in the frame.

The Voodoos netted the second period’s lone goal, with Tyler Brunet credited with the marker.

Jaret Fenton-Chypyha, who spent the 2024-25 campaign with the GNU18L’s Timmins Majors, went the distance in net for the Rock to earn the win, stopping 15 of the 17 shots he faced.

Tomas Kniaziew, who turned aside 16 of the 21 shots the Rock directed his way, was tagged with the loss for the Voodoos.

The Rock will close out round-robin action when they take on the OJHL’s Newmarket Hurricanes on Wednesday, at 1 p.m.
