According to NHL Insider Jim Matheson, recently-retired, and former-Edmonton Oiler Tyson Barrie would make a good TV hockey commentator.
Tyson Barrie officially retired yesterday, following his social media announcement to that
effect.https://x.com/NHL/status/1959971953088790901
Yet, Matheson suggests that the former-Oilers defenseman should stay close to the NHL, and apply his 15 years of playing experience to commentate and analyse the game he so loves. Jim seems to think Tyson has the right make-up for the job.
Tyson Barrie retired following 822 games played, having scored 110G and 398A, with five different teams. This extensive experience would in fact serve him well in a media capacity.
Of course, many ex-players before him have plied there skills as TV personalities, most notably Nick Kypreos and PK Subban. But so has respected and accomplished woman’s hockey star, Sarah Nurse.
Kevin Bieksa and Kelly Hrudey can be seen regularly on Hockey Night In Canada on Saturday Nights, paving the way for ex-players.
Tyson Barrie spent 8 years with the Colorado Avalanche; 3 years with the Edmonton Oilers; 2 years with the Nashville Predators; and one each with Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Tyson is a BC native, and if he were to transition into the media as a commentator, Edmonton would appear to be the most-likely demographic for him. But then again, it could be Colorado where spent the most time.
Or maybe Toronto, or Calgary, or Nashville…
Of course, he could find himself in a different city altogether. Yet, wherever he goes, Tyson would make a good TV personality. He has the disposition for it, and a calm demeanour that ex-pros bring to the table. They do well under the spotlight.
