Valter Sedin’s may have inherited his father Henrik’s hands, but he can’t use them in his chosen sport.

The young Seden is demonstrating some of his dad’s athletic instincts in being named to play for Canada’s men’s U-18 soccer roster for two friendly games (against Finland and Switzerland) taking place in early September. Valter Sedin, born in Canada, is eligible to play for either Canada or his dad’s home country of Sweden.

The son currently is a midfielder for Hammerby U19 in Stockholm. He launched his soccer career for the Vancouver Whitecaps Academy. Valter advanced to the point of playing for Vancouver in the MLS development before transferring to Hammerby earlier this year.

“Growing up with a father who was a star in Vancouver may not feel normal to many, but for me it was everyday life. Some of my best memories are being in the training environment and watching my dad play,” Valter Sedin said in an interview on the Vancouver Whitecaps website in 2023. “My goals have always been to take a place in a national team.
