Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh Penguins. All Rights Reserved
There are no burning NHL trade rumors to report today, though things are getting a little anxious in Vancouver, and they were kicking tires on Marco Rossi. Pierre-Luc Dubois opened up about why he succeeded in Washington but not in LA. The Pittsburgh Penguins reopened their Hall of Fame, and there will be a physical space in PPG Paints Arena with 10 new inductees. And we made it simple–how Evgeni Malkin can be better this season without playing better.
It looks like it’s getting to be about time for my last motorcycle ride of the season. I’m hesitant to go anywhere because as soon as I do, news will break, but I went a little nuts online this week. Arriving today, I bought a small video camera that clips onto my bike. I’d love to show you some of the vistas where I can’t stop to photograph, especially on the ride to Buffalo through the vineyards along the lake and the exact spot just outside Kane where the elevation changes and the sky bends to a new perspective.
With any luck, the little cafe in Mt. Jewett near the Kinzua Bridge survived the summer. The owner made some Facebook posts that cast doubt and hung a for sale sign. She makes a great Beef on Weck, and it’s a cool spot if you’re taking a roadie this weekend–the bridge skywalk reopened a couple of weeks ago. Support local up there!
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Penguins Hall is back. The first 20 members are already in, and the team will induct 10 more over the next three years. Here are the names and dates of the Penguins Hall of Fame celebration.
You wouldn’t believe the digging I’ve been doing this week on the Penguins’ business side. But I did a notebook story that included two key items: How Evgeni Malkin can improve this season without doing anything differently, and some serious questions for the Hoffman Group. Check out the Penguins notebook.
Steelers Now: The Steelers would like another competent wide receiver. They weren’t able to get a trade done this off-season, but now they are one of two finalists to snag a now-former Packers WR. Here’s the Steeers news.
Pittsburgh Baseball Now: Andrew Heaney was DFA’d, but that seemed overdue. The important news you want is that the 2026 schedule was released. From the home opener to the road trips, here is the 2026 Pirates schedule.
NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
Vancouver Province: The Canucks have a huge hole in the middle of their lineup. They badly need a second-line center. The Province reports the Canucks were poking around on Marco Rossi as one trade option.
I dare say I think Jim Rutheford and Patrik Allvin might be in trouble later this season if they don’t fix that issue. Canucks ownership is known to be mercurial; sometimes too patient, and sometimes very quick to make changes.
TSN: Travis Yost ranked each team based on its centers. The Penguins didn’t do very well when ranked on defense and goalies, but they ranked pretty highly with pivots.
You’d hope they ranked somewhat highly on centers with Sidney Crosby, but the rest of the crew might be a bit suspect–I’m a little surprised Yost placed them as highly as he did.
TSN Video: PLD had a pretty good year with the Washington Capitals, and it came down to team atmosphere and organization. He didn’t exactly slam the LA Kings, but the contrast was obvious, and here’s why the Capitals were able to turn it around.
NHL.com: After 14 seasons, defenseman Tyson Barrie is hanging them up. He bounced around the last couple of seasons, and the offensive defenseman called it a career.
Florida Hockey Now: Oh my gawd, yinz, we need to throw a champagne brunch immediately. Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are engaged!! It totally made my day. I mean, I heard she likes hockey, and she even went to a game, so now I like hockey too. Can you believe the news? I wonder when they’re having kids?? I also hear networks are planning to interrupt live programming for the wedding. I may have piddled because I was so happy.
Anyway, the Florida Panthers’ social media were all over it.
I will live to be 200 years old and never understand how this phenomenon occurred. There have been a dozen artists in the social media era who were more influential, talented, and widely received.
Detroit Hockey Now: The Red Wings inked Travis Hamonic to a bargain contract a couple of weeks ago. He was part of the Ottawa Senators’ turnaround from rebuilder to playoff team, and he talked about how they got it done. And that’s exactly what the Detroit Red Wings need.
Forever Blueshirts: Pay the man his money? There is already a debate underway within the New York Rangers on the future of Artemi Panarin.
