A former Vancouver Canucks goaltender slammed the team’s decision to trade away goaltender Arturs Silovs this summer his MVP performance in the Calder Cup Playoffs. It was a spring to remember for former Vancouver Canucks goaltender Arturs Silovs as he guided the club’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks, to their first-ever Calder Cup title, putting up an impressive .931 save percentage and five shutouts along the way.Silovs’ path to the National Hockey League in Vancouver was blocked, despite impressing the team’s management group in the postseason, which led to Patrik Allvin trading him to the Pittsburgh Penguins in mid-June in exchange for forward Chase Stillman and a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Entry Draft.

“We would like thank Arturs for everything he has done for the hockey club, including helping Abbotsford win the Calder Cup. We wanted to give him an opportunity elsewhere as we feel we are very well positioned in goal at the NHL, AHL and developmental level. Acquiring a future pick and depth forward will add to our organizational depth.” Allvin said.

A little over a month after the trade was completed, one former Vancouver Canucks netminder was not too happy with the team’s decision to part ways with the young Latvian.

Former Vancouver Canucks goaltender not happy with Arturs Silovs trade

During an interview with Michael Potestio of Kamloops News this week, former Vancouver Canucks goaltender Richard Brodeur didn’t seem too pleased with Patrik Allvin trading away Arturs Silovs this summer.

Brodeur told Kamloops News that Arturs Silovs is “ready” and will go on to have a good career and was puzzled that the team would move on from him, even though they already have Thatcher Demko and Kevin Lankinen as their goaltending tandem in the NHL.

“That kid is ready and he’s going to have a good career. I don’t know why they let this guy go, but I’m not the management.” Brodeur said.

While it certainly was wasn’t a popular decision, trading Arturs Silovs this summer was something that the Vancouver Canucks likely needed to do and here’s why.

For starters, as we mentioned above, Silovs’ path to the NHL is blocked by Thatcher Demko and Kevin Lankinen, both of whom will be with the club for at least the next four years, with the latter signed for five.

Because of that, it would’ve meant another year in Abbotsford for Arturs Silovs, but, there’s no guarantee he would’ve even ended up back in the AHL at the end of training camp because he needs to clear waivers first and in order to avoid losing him for nothing, Patrik Allvin decided to take a proactive approach and move the netminder while he could, despite the return not being as good as some fans were hoping.
