Former Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner broke down why he blocked a trade to the Carolina Hurricanes, which will only fuel the fans ire for the star winger.

With the tension between the Maple Leafs, their fans, and Mitch Marner, it’s safe to say that there’s no love lost, and when Marner heads back to Toronto later on this season, it’s going to be something that could turn ugly quick (at least in Marner’s eyes).

The tension started long before Marner left town, and his refusal to move elsewhere at the deadline, while knowing full well he wasn’t sticking around made him seem extremely selfish, and the vilification process began.

Regardless of his thoughts on the situation, the Maple Leafs fans are still furious with how he acted, though recently tried to clear up any potential confusion.

What Marner Said About the Rantanen Trade Proposal

The last two years there were a lot of rumors going on, a lot of different stuff swirling around. You didn’t know what was going to happen.

Then the whole Carolina thing comes up in the middle of the season. It’s a bit of an awkward one. My wife was six or seven months pregnant, we really didn’t want to be a deadline player.

I would have had to leave and go back to Toronto because my wife wasn’t coming down with me, so I was moving into Carolina myself if I did that. The logistics of it and everything, it just didn’t make sense and then from that point on, we told [the Maple Leafs] we were committed to [Toronto] and we were going to play it all out.

While on the surface is looks like Marner was trying to do well by Toronto, it’s something that toes the line between personal choice and business.

Why Fans Are Getting Tired of Mitch Marner

Marner was in the ear of his teammates asking about how Vegas was, while simultaneously telling the media and fans he was all for the Leafs.

It’s part of the reason why fans are genuinely starting to get tired of Mitch Marner; he’s full of excuses and has no accountability at times and there’s a legitimate possibility that the rumors of Marner’s safety being at risk in Toronto are just a publicity stunt.

Between the rejected deals, consistent complaining about the fans’ treatment (which oddly hasn’t happened to ANYONE else), nonchalant attitude towards his performance when it matters, and not shy to throw someone under the bus: It’s exhausting.

Mitch Marner wanted all the attention, and he’s seemingly got it. But it’s for the wrong reason, and it might be best if we all turn the other cheek to Marner going forward.
