With the NHL and NHLPA officially making the move to a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), the Vancouver Canucks officially have been given a three-month notice to sign Captain Quinn Hughes to an eight-year contract extension. With President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford’s’ comments stating it might not come down to money with Quinn Hughes, as he’s already expressed his desire to play with his siblings, money does play a major factor in these decisions, and the Canucks hold a major advantage over him in that regard.“This is relevant for the #Canucks re-Quinn Hughes.

Per these rules, the team could sign him to an eight-year contract next summer. If he then hit free agency in July 2027, he’d only be eligible to sign for six years with a new team.

That’s a potential ~$30 million difference.” Noah Strang said.

Vancouver Canucks have three-months to sign Quinn Hughes before being forced to trade him

Under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) which the NHL and NHPA have officially ratified on Tuesday, big changes are coming to the length of a contract teams can offer players.

For players signing an extension with their current team who have been on the roster at the previous trade deadline, they can receive a maximum seven-year contract, coming down from eight-years.

On the other hand, unrestricted free agents (UFA’s) will now be limited to a six-year contract, also coming down from eight-years.

Even though Hughes’ contract is not up for another two seasons, the clock is ticking for the Canucks to lock him up for the maximum of eight-years until the new CBA switches the guidelines.

Report: #Canucks Will Have Less Than Three Months To Sign Quinn Hughes To An Eight-Year Extension

By that outcome, if a deal is not struck in the next coming months, the leverage they hold over him to give him more term is gone, and his incentive to stay for the money decreases by a massive margin.

Just like Rutherford said, if a deal is not signed this season, there is a very good chance the organization elects to officially start shopping him around in order to not lose him for nothing.
