Heading into this summer, there were questions about what might happen with Anthony Stolarz, and Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving has just confirmed what many suspected.Last summer, Anthony Stolarz joined the Leafs on a two-year deal that carries a $2.5M cap hit through this season. Despite injury issues, the 31-year-old former second-round pick solidified the crease for the Maple Leafs with Joseph Woll, giving the Leafs the best or one of the best tandems in the NHL last season.
Playing a career-high 34 games, the New Jersey native posted a 21-8-3 record with a 2.14 GAA and ridiculous .926 save percentage.
Stolarz has been eligible to sign an extension since July 1st, but there was debate about whether the Leafs should sign him to an extension or not given his small body of work as a starter with projections between $5.5M and $6.5M per season.
Brad Treliving Shares Surprising Update on Negotiations With Anthony Stolarz
While many took Pagnotta’s report to mean that the Leafs had only just engaged in talks with their pending free agent goaltender, GM Brad Treliving shared with The Athletic that club and Stolarz have already held multiple discussions and that he is hopeful something can be done ahead of training camp.
“We’ve certainly explored some things with Anthony and his representative, and we’d love to find a way to get something done. If there’s something that both sides are comfortable with, we’ll look at it. And we’ve been in those discussions for some time right now. We’ll see what the coming days bring.”
For once, the Leafs aren’t already up against the cap heading into next off-season having $24.9M in cap space, according to PuckPedia, meaning that they do not have to play the ‘wait and see’ game.
With Woll already signed for another two seasons after this one at a reasonable $3.6M per season, the Leafs could have their tandem locked up long-term for well under $10M per season, which is some very good value as long as they can both remain healthy and productive.
As training camp is around the corner, Treliving’s update is a positive one for Leafs Nation after a roller-coaster of a summer and hopefully the two sides are able to agree on terms over the next couple of weeks.
