The Avalanche’s starting goalie is primed for a big year in goal. Also, a former Avalanche forward announced his retirement and both the Carolina Hurricanes and Ottawa Senators released new jerseys ahead of the upcoming season.
All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — September 4.
Colorado Hockey Now
Mackenzie Blackwood is locked up for five years and will enter the season as a sure bet starting goalie for the Avs. What a nice change from a year ago, as the ending to Alexandar Georgiev’s tenure in Colorado went completely off the rails.
Here’s my preview for Blackwood’s upcoming season. How man games can he win in 2025-26?

The entire 2009-10 Avalanche season is flashing before my eyes. Earlier in the offseason, Peter Mueller announced his retirement. Now, it’s Brandon Yip.
That was one of my favorite Avalanche season’s and Yip was a big reason why. Especially in the first few months.

Around The NHL
We had two big jersey reveals on Wednesday.
First, the Carolina Hurricanes showed off their new road jerseys. Ever since Tom Dundon purchased the team, he was never a fan of the white jersey. That’s likely why it got a makeover.

The next reveal was the Ottawa Senators, who released a third jersey that will be worn 12 times in 2025-26. I actually really like it. A+ on the new threads. But they get a failing grade for having an underwhelming reveal featuring one of their alumni dressed in business casual.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Pens captain skates have begun and some of the new guys are tricking into town.
Montreal Hockey Now: Here’s the latest trade rumor surrounding the Habs. And yes, it does involve Carey Price and his big contract.
Vegas Hockey Now: This was actually a pretty fun clip. Reilly Smith attended a local comedy show and sat front row. The comedian heckled him without realizing who he was.
Detroit Hockey Now: Klim Kostin spent the 2023-24 season with the Red Wings and he recently talked about his time there. Doesn’t sound like he was happy with the coaching staff.
San Jose Hockey Now: Joe Pavelski talked about what helped him get named to the USA Hockey Hall of Fame.
Boston Hockey Now: Nikita Zadorov was nice enough to give his time to local media. It sounds like he’s ready to have a bounce back in his second year with the Bruins.
