Connor McDavid commented on his contract extension, and Leafs fans are taking note.McDavid spoke to TSN on where he is on a new deal with the Edmonton Oilers, being a pending UFA after this upcoming season.

While there’s nothing pointing to the 28-year-old leaving, that hasn’t stopped speculation over the possibility that it could happen, and McDavid has pointed to the fact that he’ll do what’s best for his family, without mentioning Edmonton directly.

One thing Connor McDavid did not say in his comments was that he was guaranteed to re-sign with the Oilers, and that has people talking.

What Connor McDavid Said About His Future in New Comments

Connor McDavid spoke publicly on his ongoing contract extension talks, but didn’t provide much clarity on if he was going to sign with Edmonton, and if so when.

McDavid told TSN’s Ryan Rishaug that he’s still trying to make sure the situation regarding his next contract makes sense, and offers stability to himself and his family in the long-term.

We’re trying to find a scenario that works for everybody in terms of my family, my families security, a deal that makes sense for the team to continue to have success. My belief in this season and the players this year has never been higher.

The comments made by McDavid don’t directly say that he will be returning to Edmonton, but also gives some positivity towards the Oilers heading into next season, with his focus being seemingly on how the season goes.

While it’s understandable for McDavid to focus on the Oilers goal for a cup rather than get stuck in contract talks, but that talk is something that will give Leafs fans pause, because they’ve heard that line before.

Why Leafs Fans Are Watching His Situation Closely

Toronto Maple Leafs fans are aware of players wanting to focus on the season at hand before rushing into a new deal, but then also know that doesn’t always mean what they think.

The sentiment was one echoed by Mitch Marner last season where he maintained his focus was on the season and helping the Leafs win. Even when rumors began to swirl that he could be gone, Marner maintained he wanted to stay in Toronto and his focus was on the cup. Leafs fans know how that ended.

Leafs fans suddenly made note of McDavid’s comments, and had both excitement at the prospect of the boyhood fan coming to Toronto.

Of course, McDavid didn’t mention any other team, and wouldn’t. Marner never brought up the idea of wanting to leave, and likely he didn’t want to leave Toronto, but made his choice based on what he thought was best. McDavid could do the same, even if he loves Edmonton.

The Oilers would surely want to offer McDavid just about whatever he wants that the team can afford, and it may be as easy as agreeing to whatever he offers, knowing what losing McDavid would mean.

Toronto would have to make a lot work to sign McDavid, even with a rising salary cap, but almost every team in the league will be doing just about whatever they can to bring Connor McDavid to their roster if even the slightest indication suggested it could be possible, and Toronto would be foolish not to position themselves as well.
