A look at the Panthers

The story for the Panthers on Monday night was the early struggles of goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. He gave up the game-opening goal to William Nylander just 33 seconds into the contest, and the Panthers never tied the game.

They scored three times in the third period, including goals by unheralded players Eetu Luostarinen and Uvis Balinskis.

The four goals Florida scored in the loss are the most it has had in any game vs. Toronto this season.

Panthers players to watch

Luostarinen and Bennett were the only Panthers forwards to score on Monday night.

Including his slow start, Bobrovsky stopped 24 of 29 shots and gave up only one goal in each of the last two periods.

Brad Marchand and Carter Verhaeghe were the only Panthers to record two points in the loss.

Toronto’s playoff journey

The Toronto Maple Leafs reached the second round by defeating their provincial rival Ottawa Senators in six games. Toronto won the first three games of the series, but the Maple Leafs lost the last two, giving up four goals in both games.

Toronto closed out Ottawa in Game 6 on May 1 with a 4-2 win at the Canadian Tire Centre. William Nylander had two goals and an assist for the Maple Leafs to lift them to their second series victory in three seasons.

Prior to 2023, the last time Toronto reached the second round of the playoffs was 2004. The Maple Leafs haven’t gone to the conference finals since 2002.

Florida’s playoff journey

The defending Stanley Cup champion Panthers began their title defense by making short work of the in-state rival Tampa Bay Lightning in five games in the first round. All five games in that series were decided by at least two goals.

Sergei Bobrovsky played very well in the series, allowing more than two goals only once in the five games.

Matthew Tkachuk had a team-high three goals in the first round, and Sam Reinhart led the team with six points.
