The Guelph Storm have named Charlie Paquette their captain for the 2025-26 season. Quinn Beauchesne and Rowan Topp were awarded the “A” for the next season.
So, you may be wondering “Why should I care about three non-Flyers prospects forming an OHL leadership group?”
Luchanko Not Named to Guelph’s Leadership Group
Well, that would be because during the latter half of the 2024-25 season, Flyers 2024 first-round pick Jett Luchanko wore the “C” for the Storm.
As it stands, it feels like a toss up as to whether or not Luchanko will join the NHL club this season. He very well could return to Guelph. That may be changing.
What to do with the Flyers prized center prospect has been a question all offseason. He does not quite look NHL ready, but Luchanko is not doing himself any favors staying in the OHL.
You would think that if it was such a toss up, the Storm would have waited to update their leadership group. Maybe Luchanko would return? Are they making it obvious that they believe Luchanko will make the Flyers? It is beginning to feel that way.
Or, could it do with other recent news?
PuckPedia prematurely reported that teams could loan a 19-year-old to the AHL this season. While they have since backtracked, citing its not definitive, PuckPedia left the door open for the new CBA rule to make an immediate impact.
It was reported that the CHL and NHLPA still had to meet to talk about revising the current agreement that keeps 19-year-olds out of the AHL.
Maybe Guelph is getting the sense that it could become a possibility for Luchanko to suit up for the Phantoms this year. That would make the Flyers decision easy.
With training camp just around the corner, we are set to get our answers soon.
