Toronto Maple Leafs fans are going to start getting excited after Connor McDavid‘s latest comments show that he might not be fully committed to the Edmonton Oilers.
A lot of the headlines recently have been dominated by the will he or won’t he nature of Connor McDavid’s contract. What seemed like a foregone conclusion now has an air of speculation around it, and recent comments from McDavid might lead to a lot more fuel to this rumor fire.
Linked heavily to the Toronto Maple Leafs, McDavid would undoubtedly become one of the biggest names ever in franchise history, and knows the importance of winning in Toronto and the allure (and incentives) that come with it.
What Connor McDavid Said About His Career and Future
Oilers fans are hoping McDavid thinks long-term about what he’s built in Alberta and decides to stick around, however the best player in the world is going to take his time to make the right decision.
It’s something he discussed with reports recently, and while he has said he was focused on winning in Edmonton, he did mention that he’s gotta make sure he does it right:
I’ve put everything I have into my career. You only get one chance to do it and to do it right. And that leads to taking your time with it.
Well, that seems like a gut punch to Oilers fans, and it sounds like a guy who has done everything he can to bring a Cup to Edmonton and may be tired of coming up short.
Why Leafs Fans Are Speculating About McDavid After His Latest Comments
While it’s a very good possibility that McDavid wants to get his extension with Edmonton right and not overcommit but also make sure he’s got a good enough window to win; it’s a delicate balancing act.
But that isn’t going to stop the Maple Leafs faithful from getting excited at the potential, and a lot of them feel like McDavid might be yearning for a return home:
Obviously, leave it to Leafs Nation to take an inch and make a mile of it, but McDavid’s constant attachment to Toronto and openness about the love and passion he has representing the city shows that he very well could jump ship.
It’s also a lot of fun to think about what could possibly be when it comes to adding McDavid to a lineup already stacked with names like Auston Matthews and William Nylander. Can you imagine how McDavid could unlock Matthew Knies‘ potential? It would be borderline absurd.
At this point in time, we have to take every bit of a potential McDavid to Toronto deal and run with it. This is the first time the Leafs could bring in someone who is truly game-changing through free agency.
John Tavares was the first star to head back home. Fingers crossed that Connor decides to do the same.
