MONTREAL — There’s always Montreal Canadiens news to be absorbed on a daily basis, but there are only so many hours in a day. On Sundays, we recap the most exciting and relevant NHL news stories that you may have missed throughout the week so that you can stay in the Canadiens loop.

Monday

The recent rule change in the NCAA will have an impact on some Montreal Canadiens prospects, including Owen Protz and Hayden Paupanekis. While the change is bound to attract a lot of talent to the American collegiate ranks, it should lead to more available ice time in the Canadian Hockey League. Prospect L.J. Mooney is one of the most talented young players in the system. The fact that he also trains with his cousin, Logan Cooley, adds yet another interesting angle to his development. [Canadiens Prospect Rankings – The Electric L.J. Mooney]

By adding Noah Dobson to the mix, the Habs immediately improved their blue line by leaps and bounds. And now that Lane Hutson has a decent amount of NHL experience under his belt, the defensive situation seems much healthier than in the previous season. However, like most defensive squads, there’s still a lot of work to be done before we can consider it an area of strength for the Montreal Canadiens. Tuesday

The Montreal Canadiens paid out the final signing bonus of Carey Price’s contract on Monday. Now that the $5.5 million bonus has been paid, Price carries a $10.5 million cap hit, but is only owed $2 million in salary. This makes him a perfect trade target for a team looking to reach the cap floor, such as the San Jose Sharks. [Key Factors Regarding Potential Carey Price Trade]

Speaking of a potential Price trade, his wife, Angela, quickly addressed the situation. When asked what she thought of the situation, Angela said, “[We would] probably feel the same way most of Montreal would feel. But ultimately, you want what’s best for the team.”

As per usual, we need to take social media posts with a grain of salt, but it does give the impression that Canadiens management has already addressed the issue with the Price family, which is par for the course when we consider Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton prioritize honesty and open communication.

«Tu souhaites ce qui est le mieux pour l’équipe.»

Habs prospect Jacob Fowler gave two interesting answers in a Q&A alongside Stanley Cup winner Andrei Vasilevskiy. Okay, it was closer to one funny answer, and one serious answer. [Canadiens Prospect Rankings – The Heir Apparent, Jacob Fowler]

Former Canadiens defenceman David Savard was in Brossard on Monday, attempting to steal Samuel Montembeault’s job!

On a serious note, it’s good to see him in a familiar situation, as retirement forces players to face a brand-new life, which no longer includes the routines and support systems they enjoyed while playing hockey. Think of it, they’ve never actually lived a life without hockey taking up the majority of their time, making retirement a rather frustrating situation at first.

Savard also happens to be one of the nicest guys who has ever played in the NHL. I’d say he’s right up there with Karl Alzner in terms of his affability.

Wednesday

Several of the rule changes included in the updated CBA will be effective immediately. Notably, teams can no longer ‘paper’ prospects, which may complicate the salary cap situation, not to mention the potential Carey Price trade. [NHL/CBA Rule Changes Impact Canadiens, Price Trade, & More]

With the regular season quickly approaching, it’s time to take a look at some of the Montreal Canadiens players with the most to gain or lose in 2025-26. All three players we selected happen to be on expiring contracts, making the upcoming year particularly important in regard to their future with the organization. Jerome Berube published his Montreal Canadiens prospect rankings, and they’re shockingly close to the rankings from our community. On a related note, Jerome is one of the best prospect analysts going, and is definitely worthy of our support.

Two of the most important roster players were hard at work on Tuesday. Noah Dobson is expected to play a crucial role in Montreal’s push for the playoffs, while Kirby Dach represents one of their best bets when it comes to filling the No.2 centre gap in the lineup.

Renaud Lavoie suggested teams may ask for a second-round pick to absorb Carey Price’s contract. Considering Kent Hughes’ history in trade negotiations, there’s a decent chance Montreal won’t have to pony up a top-64 pick. [Latest Canadiens Trade Rumour – Carey Price Situation]

The Bell Centre will have a new centre ice design, with a clear uptick in red ice compared to previous centre-ice logos. Honestly, I think it looks pretty good. More colour is rarely a bad idea.

Arber Xhekaj was also taking part in the usual Brossard summer workout. It’s beyond encouraging to see so many players hard at work well before the team actually requires them to report.

David Reinbacher was among the talented rookies at the NHLPA’s yearly showcase. It’s also worth noting he went out of his way to mention that he’s 100 percent healthy.

The Habs have a few talented players set to develop in Europe this season, including Vinzenz Rohrer and Aatos Koivu. To be clear, there’s a chance Rohrer could crack the Canadiens’ lineup at camp, but if not, he’s bound for Zurich. [Montreal Canadiens Prospects Set To Develop In Europe]

The latest in the Carey Price dossier: Kent Hughes is looking to move him, but he’s in no rush, and he’s not worried about the team’s salary cap situation.

My own opinion: Price’s contract will likely get moved. Potentially in the hours or days, or eventually before the season starts. But Hughes isn’t too interested in overpaying to move it and he’s right about not needing to move it at all. Three teams are currently over the cap,…

Lane Hutson’s life is simple. Hockey, more hockey, coaching youth hockey, and then raising money for charity via hockey.

Some unfortunate news broke late on Friday night. Legendary Canadiens netminder Ken Dryden passed away at the age of 78. [Canadiens Legend Ken Dryden Has Passed On]

The trade everyone’s been expecting was finalized on Friday. The Montreal Canadiens moved Carey Price’s contract to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a fifth-round pick. [BREAKING: Carey Price Traded To The San Jose Sharks]

The move gives the Canadiens more financial flexibility, especially since it opens up pure cap space rather than long-term injured reserve relief funds. Most of the money is likely to be spent trying to fill the No.2 centre gap in the roster. [Carey Price Trade Leads To Opportunities For Canadiens]

Price reacted to the trade via Twitter, with his classic penchant for brevity.

Always a Hab. Just a teal one for now 😉🔵⚪️🔴

Brossard has never been more popular! Several Canadiens players have made it their unofficial summer home, an encouraging sign as to their overall buy-in to Montreal’s long-term plans. It’s a situation that was made possible via solid leadership from Nick Suzuki. [Canadiens Summer Workouts Show Dedication, Leadership]
