The San Jose Sharks have acquired Carey Price’s contract from the Montreal Canadiens via trade.
Montreal is also sending the Sharks a 2026 fifth-round pick in exchange for prospect defenseman Gannon Laroque.
Recent reports had speculated that the San Jose Sharks were a potential landing spot for the former NHL MVP. Price, now unofficially retired, will give GM Mike Grier and the Sharks more cap flexibility if they trade players away at the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline. The Sharks were only $5 million above the NHL’s cap floor before the trade.
Price is in the final year of an eight-year contract that carries a $10.5 million AAV. The 38-year-old goalie was recently paid a bonus, meaning the actual cash dollar amount of what the Sharks owe him is much lower.

Price has a debilitating knee injury and hasn’t played a professional hockey game since the 2021-2022 season. He will finish out the remainder of his contract like Logan Couture will.
