Quinn Hughes’ Uncertain Future Forces Vancouver Canucks GM to Weigh Mass Fire Sale at Deadline

An NHL insider wondered recently if the Vancouver Canucks should be entertaining offers on all their players amid Quinn Hughes‘ uncertain future with the franchise.
In less than a year, Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes will become eligible to sign a contract extension with the club, but it’s unclear if he will do that or if he will end up testing the open market on Canada Day 2027, with the latter a serious possibility at this point.
Last week, Hughes broke his silence about trade rumors involving his name this summer, saying that he can handle the noise and when it comes to his future as a Vancouver Canuck, all he said is that he wants to help his team get back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season and isn’t sure how he’ll feel next summer when he can sign an extension.”Every year brings its different challenges. Two of my best buddies (Canuck teammates Conor Garland and Brock Boeser) just signed in Vancouver long-term. I will say last year was not fun; it just wasn’t. But I’m a really competitive guy … and last year was a failure, so I’m trying to bring my best. Try to be a great leader and help my team get in the playoffs. Who knows what we can do and who knows how I’ll be feeling this time next year? It’s still a year away.” Hughes said to Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre.
Insider wonders if Vancouver Canucks should listen to offers on all player amid Hughes uncertainty
While the topic of Quinn Hughes’ future is certainly going to be a big story throughout the 2025-26 season, the Vancouver Canucks are focusing on what they can control at the moment on the ice, which will begin with training camp in Penticton starting next Thursday.
With their attention on training camp and getting off to a strong start to the new campaign, if things go south quickly for the Canucks, could we potentially see the club explore the possibility of a rebuild or retool?
During a recent edition of The Sheet with Jeff Marek, the insider says that with the uncertainty surrounding Quinn Hughes and his future in Vancouver, the Canucks should probably be listening to offers on everyone on their roster.
“If you’re the Canucks, we all know where this thing is heading with Quinn Hughes; if that’s where the team is at, where Quinn Hughes is at, how are they not listening on…every single player?” Marek said.
A rebuild or retool not only feels unrealistic at this time, but also quite tough to pull off with the big contracts that Vancouver has on the books right now including Elias Pettersson‘s, Jake DeBrusk’s, Kevin Lankinen‘s Thatcher Demko‘s, among others.
For now, the Vancouver Canucks shouldn’t be too worried about the possibility of Quinn Hughes leaving or if they need to rebuild/retool if he leaves, they need to put their attention towards this year and trying their absolute best to not only make a push for a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but win a round or two as well.
