SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Sports) – Utah native Trevor Lewis has played a few preseason games in Salt Lake City, but never a regular season game. So as he returns to his home state to play against the Utah Hockey Club with the Los Angeles Kings tonight, he couldn’t be more excited.

“Yeah, it’ll be fun,” Lewis said before tonight’s game at the Delta Center. “I mean, it’s always nice to be able to come back here and see some family and friends. Now I get to actually play in a hockey game in front of them, so it’ll be pretty exciting.”

Lewis also hoped Utah would get an NHL team, but when it happened last April, he couldn’t believe it.

“Yeah, it was kind of a shock,” Lewis said. “I didn’t think it would ever happen, especially while I was still playing. So it was a little bit of a shock, but I kind of knew the city would be on board right away. Obviously the fan support they are getting, it’s been pretty amazing. I always thought it could be a hockey town, but I never thought it would be. So it’s cool to see that and all the support.”

Lewis was a part of two Stanley Cup winning teams with the Kings, and when he got his day with the Cup, he brought it to Utah both times. Lewis still lives in Utah during the summer, and loves how the sport has grown here.

“Growing up, there wasn’t too much hockey here. My dad is Canadian, so he kind of got me into it when I was young. Growing up, it was kind of hard to find ice time, and there weren’t a whole lot of rinks and not a whole lot of kids playing. So now when you come back, it’s hard to find this time even for me. So, it’s awesome to see what the team’s done for youth hockey here.”

Nothing but the tooth for the Utah Hockey Club

Lewis doesn’t know how much longer he will play in the NHL. Would he like to finish his career in Utah? He staying loyal to the Kings, where he has played 14 of his 17 seasons.

“The organization has done so much for me,” Lewis said about the Kings. “So if they were going to offer me, I was going to go back there first. But obviously, everyone wants to play in their hometown. But, I’ve been in L.A. so long, it feels like home to me.”
