The Dallas Mavericks announced head coach Jason Kidd’s coaching staff for the 2025-26 season on Monday, highlighted by Frank Vogel stepping into the role of associate head coach.

The announcement caps one of the NBA’s biggest staff shakeups of the offseason. Six assistants departed, including lead assistant Sean Sweeney, who joined the San Antonio Spurs. Jared Dudley also left, taking the lead assistant role with the Denver Nuggets.

Player development coach God Shammgod moved on to the Orlando Magic. Longtime assistant Darrell Armstrong also was left off the coaching staff after being placed on administrative amid an aggravated assault case, while Alex Jensen and Marko Milić exited as part of broader changes that followed the Luka Dončić trade.

Frank Vogel Takes Lead Role

Vogel, who served as a consultant with Dallas last season, now becomes Kidd’s top assistant. He will be tasked with leading the Mavericks’ defense, bringing a reputation as one of the league’s top defensive minds.

The veteran coach most recently led the Phoenix Suns in 2023-24. Before that, he spent three seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, winning the 2020 championship with Kidd on his staff.

Vogel also had head coaching stops in Orlando and Indiana. With the Pacers, he guided teams built around defensive intensity to two trips to the Eastern Conference finals, where Indiana ranked among the NBA’s elite defensive units.

He began his NBA career as an assistant with Boston and Philadelphia from 2001-04 after starting in basketball as a student manager at Kentucky.

Jason Kidd’s Bench Adds Championship Experience

Alongside Vogel, Dallas hired Jay Triano, Popeye Jones, Phil Handy, Mike Penberthy, Dru Anthrop, and Jordan Sears.

Triano joins Dallas after three years as an assistant in Sacramento. The Canadian coach has 308 games of head coaching experience with the Raptors and Suns and is expected to oversee the Mavericks’ offense. He is known for implementing Princeton offensive principles — a system Kidd himself thrived in as a player with the New Jersey Nets.

Jones returns to Dallas after four seasons with Denver, where he was part of the 2023 title run. He will serve as the No. 3 assistant with a focus on defense. Jones, who played 11 years in the NBA, still holds the Mavericks’ single-game rebounding record with 28.

Phil Handy and Mike Penberthy provide the Mavericks with respected player development expertise. Both worked with Kidd and Vogel on the Lakers’ 2020 championship staff, bringing continuity and familiarity. Handy adds three championship rings from his time in Cleveland, Toronto, and Los Angeles, while Penberthy brings extensive shooting knowledge. The pair also has pre-existing relationships with stars Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving, having coached both in recent years.

Dru Anthrop reunites with Vogel after working in Phoenix last season. He previously spent four years with the Lakers in video and player development, contributing to their 2020 title. Jordan Sears rejoins Dallas after two seasons as head coach of the Texas Legends, the team’s G League affiliate, and earlier experience in video coordination roles with the Mavericks and Bucks.

The group joins returning assistants Eric Hughes, Josh Broghamer, and Keith Veney.
