The Vancouver Canucks reportedly didn’t want to move on from a 22-year-old centerman this summer, despite some NHL clubs being interested in acquiring him.

Heading into the offseason, Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin had a lot on his plate as while the club was examining external options to for their second line center hole, he also had a number of free agents that needed to be signed to new contracts, including Aatu Raty.

Given that the Canucks’ center depth is already pretty thin, it was hard to see them moving on from any of their prospects at that position, Aatu Raty included, but it looks like there were teams that wanted to acquire the Finnish forward.

During Monday’s edition of Canucks Central on Sportsnet 650, Satiar Shah shared that he heard this summer that the Vancouver Canucks were reluctant to move on from Aatu Raty this summer and that he believes there were some teams that showed interest in him and checked in with Patrik Allvin regarding his availability.

“The thing that I came away from this offseason, You know something new I learned that I thought was interesting and maybe you won’t find this as interesting because nothing happened, but how high the Canucks are on Aatu Raty. I heard there were a couple of teams that checked in on him and tried to see if they could pry him away from Vancouver and I don’t want know what the conversations were like, I can’t sit here and give you exact details, but I heard from people from different teams was that the Canucks were pretty reluctant to part with Aatu Raty.” Shah said.

If you watched any of Aatu Raty’s games last season in Abbotsford, it makes a lot of sense why other National Hockey League teams would have interest in him.

The Oulu, Finland native has a ton of potential – could one day be a legit second line centerman – is still just 22-years-old and is on the cusp of becoming a full-time NHLer.

Thankfully for Vancouver Canucks fans, Aatu Raty isn’t going anywhere and is signed through the 2026-27 season, but it’s going to be interesting to see how he’s deployed by Adam Foote and the coaching staff this season, but it’ll most likely be a bottom-six role to start.
