Former Maple Leafs Forward Signs PTO With the Florida Panthers

On Tuesday it was announced that the Florida Panthers had signed former Maple Leafs forward Noah Gregor to a PTO ahead of the 2025-26 season.
As the NHL season approaches, it’s time for teams to get their rosters in order and that means some last-minute signings, more specifically a PTO.
We’ve seen a few already signed like Jack Johnson, Oliver Kylington, Kevin Labanc, and Dylan Gambrell among others as they try to earn a roster spot in the waning weeks before opening night.
Well, we can add another to the list and it’s yet another Maple Leaf. According to sources, the Florida Panthers are signing forward Noah Gregor to a PTO as a way to add some potential insurance depth while they deal with injury issues.
What This PTO Means for Gregor’s Career
The news was actually broken by Gregor’s uncle Jason, who is currently a hockey analyst and works with The Daily Faceoff as a podcast co-host.
Gregor, 27, had seven points (4 goals, 3 assists) in 52 games for the San Jose Sharks and Ottawa Senators in 2024-25; he spent one season with the Maple Leafs in 2023-24 where he had 12 points (6 goals, 6 assists) in 63 games. This likely means that Gregor is going to be used as insurance depth in the wake of Matthew Tkachuk‘s surgery and subsequent recovery. He won’t be around until potentially January so if Florida wants to make sure they have enough bodies, adding Gregor is good start.
Why the Maple Leafs Likely Moved On From Gregor
Gregor was tapped as a potential option for the Maple Leafs again this season either as a cheap free agent or a PTO, but it seems like if he wasn’t sticking around after 23-24, it’s unlikely he could be back this year.
Plus, there’s a huge logjam already in Toronto’s forward group, and they still need to find a way to get rid of David Kampf, and potentially Calle Jarnkrok; but there’s still a ton of bodies. It’s not that Gregor is bad per se but he doesn’t offer anything that Toronto doesn’t already have. He hits and can score a bit but so can Scott Laughton, Steven Lorentz, Dakota Joshua, and Nic Roy; all who offer more versatility than Gregor.
For the Maple Leafs, they have enough issues to worry about and might already bring in another forward anyways; so it looks like the next time they’ll see Gregor is staring from the other side; potentially able to be part of a three-peat.
