Cale Makar isn’t eligible for a contract until July 1, 2026, but Martin Necas can sign one now. When will they both lock up new deals? Also, Dustin Wolf got a huge contract from the Calgary Flames and it just might set a blueprint for Spencer Knight.
All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — September 10.

The first half of the September Mailbag was published yesterday, and the second part will be out later this morning.

Around The NHL
Flames Lock up Wolf: It’s likely because the Flames missed the playoffs, but we don’t talk enough about what Dustin Wolf meant to that team. Calgary had the 29th best offense. Outside of Nazem Kadri, it felt like nobody else could score a goal.
Wolf held them in the playoff race until Game 81. They finished with 96 points and barely missed the playoffs.
Now? Wolf has been rewarded with a whopper of a contract extension. It’s seven years, $52.5 million. The $7.5 million AAV is up there with the highest in the league. It’s the 11th highest cap hit among goalies heading into 2025-26.
Chicago Hockey Now: Last year Chicago landed Spencer Knight in the Seth Jones trade. He looked solid in his Blackhawks debut to end the season and could be a big player in helping that team turn their fortunes. Could the Wolf contract set a blueprint for Knight’s next deal?
San Jose Hockey Now: This is a great get for my colleague Sheng Peng in San Jose. Peng met with Yaroslav Askarov, and the Sharks’ No. 1 goalie answered subscriber questions on SJHN.

Detroit Hockey Now: Former Red Wings forward Daniel Sprong is getting help from a Detroit legend to better adjust to the KHL.
Ottawa Hockey Now: The 2020 draft was great to the Senators. 2021? Not so much.
