Dan’s Daily: Trade Talk Erupts; Decision Looms; Crosby Speaks

The players junket with the national media types as part of the NHL press tour created plenty of fireworks and plenty of wonder for the NHL trade market. Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby shrugged off talk about leaving the Penguins, though people around him continue to leave the door ajar. Meanwhile, New Jersey Devils center Jack Hughes spurred more trade rumors involving his brother, Quinn.

Elsewhere in the Daily, Sportsnet offered up a good look at the top 10 prospects of the 2026 draft. Calgary inked young goalie Dustin Wolf to a sweet new deal, while Colorado has some looming questions of money and trades.

OK, I’m ready. Tomorrow is go time. Friday the rookies hit the ice in Buffalo and I’ll be there.

A friendly reader teased me yesterday that I live like a kid with motorcycles and a diet that includes plenty of hot dogs and pizza. I thought about it. As I booked more travel yesterday and prepared for the coming grind, it’s not like being a kid. I live like someone who knows this ends sooner than later.

So I’m packing in as much as I can before it’s over. The travel and hockey is joy. It’s exhausting and beats me up, but it’s also pretty great. So, let’s do this.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: I’ve been busy playing travel agent this week, but the Penguins have been busy lining up giveaways, theme nights, and community nights with special ticket packages. Here’s everything you need to know about the Penguins’ promotional schedule.

TSN: Sidney Crosby’s agent told TSN that you never know if Crosby will change his mind, but Crosby spoke with a couple of the national folks and did his best to straddle the line of wanting to get back to the playoffs, but also wants to remain with the Penguins.

Steelers Now: The Pittsburgh Steelers defense just got a boost. A hard-hitting, talented safety is on his way after signing a free agent contract. Say hello to Jabrill Peppers.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now: For gosh sakes. Bad teams lose in bad ways, but this one was silly. Here’s the latest Pittsburgh Pirates clunker.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

New Jersey Hockey Now: Stir those trade rumors. A couple of days after Quinn Hughes tamped them down, big brother Jack opened the future possibility of a blockbuster trade or free agent coordination to bring Quinn to the New Jersey Devils.

TSN: A decision is looming on reinstating the five acquitted Team Canada players, and reports indicate that decision is coming soon.

CBC: Also as part of the media tour, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly spoke to the national press, too. Decisions are forthcoming on the Team Canada five.

I’m going to forewarn you. At least three of them will mostly likely be reinstated immediately. Legally, they were acquitted. A judge essentially called them innocent.

Boston Hockey Now: High standards but limited expectations. As the season gets underway, there’s a lot of hope but a good dose of reality hitting the Boston Bruins.

Colorado Hockey Now: There’s growing chatter about what comes next for the Avs. What about Martin Necas’s next contract–will he resign or test the watters next summer? For that matter, what about Cale Makar, too? There’s a lot on the Colorado Avalanche’s agenda.

Calgary Hockey Now: A big payday for Calder Trophy runner-up Dustin Wolf. As our folks up at Calgary Hockey Now write, it’s part of the grand turnaround of the Calgary Flames.
