DULUTH — Moorhead, Minnesota-native Max Cullen announced his commitment to Minnesota Duluth
on Wednesday night.
The 16-year-old forward is entering his junior season at Moorhead High School after helping the Spuds win a Minnesota boys hockey state championship in Class AA last season.

commented UMD sophomore center Zam Plante.
The 6-foot-1, 165-pound Cullen had 11 goals and 17 assists as a sophomore last season — his first on varsity — for the state champion Spuds. He had 46 goals and 35 assists in 59 games the year before playing AA Bantam hockey in Moorhead.
Cullen’s USHL rights are owned by the Muskegon Lumberjacks, who selected him in the eighth round of the league’s future’s draft in 2024.

Max Cullen is the son of Mark Cullen, who played 38 games in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks, Philadelphia Flyers and Florida Panthers between 2005 and 2012. Mark Cullen played 562 games in the American Hockey League over 10 seasons, winning the Calder Cup with the Houston Aeros in 2003. Mark Cullen was a captain at Colorado College.
Three-time Stanley Cup champion Matt Cullen, a member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, is Max Cullen’s uncle and the older brother of Mark Cullen. Mark and Matt Cullen were born in Virginia, Minnesota, before moving and growing up in Moorhead.
During the COVID-19 pandemic,
11-year-old Max Cullen opened a nine-holf golf course in his yard in Moorhead.
