Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes recently opened up and shared details regarding a couple of injuries he suffered last season which cause him to miss 14 games. As you might remember, Hughes dealt with some injury issues last season, one of which kept him out of the 4 Nations Face-Off – the first best-on-best international event in nine years, but as Hughes’ focus now turns towards the season ahead, he recently reflected on last year and those injuries he dealt with.

During an appearance on the 32 Thoughts Podcast while at the NHL’s North American Player Media Tour in Las Vegas, Quinn Hughes was asked by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman and Kyle Bukauskas about the injuries he suffered last season.

According to Hughes, he tore a ligament in his hand in December and continued to play with the issue by wearing a cast through the first month of 2025, which is quite impressive as he finished January with 17 points (six goals, 11 assists) in 13 games.

Then at the end of January, while playing in a game against the Dallas Stars, Hughes said that he was on the receiving end of an elbow from Russian forward Evgenii Dadonov which an MRI revealed caused him to sustain an oblique tear.

“It was frustrating because I tore a ligament in my hand in December, and I played with a cast in January. The cast was amazing. I was able to play with that, and I was playing really well.” Hughes said.

He added, “Then I got elbowed by [Evgenii] Dadonov against [the Dallas Stars on Jan. 31]. I thought I got the wind knocked out of me. We got the MRI and had the oblique tear.”

Hughes was forced to miss out on the 4 Nations Face-Off due to the injuries, which was unfortunate as it would’ve been his first international competition since the 2019 IIHF World Championship.

The 25-year-old made his return to the Vancouver Canucks’ lineup on February 26th, helping his team to a 3-2 overtime win on the road against the Los Angeles Kings.
