Another key piece of the Chicago Blackhawks’ rebuild has a new contract.

On Saturday morning, the Blackhawks announced that they signed goaltender Spencer Knight to a three-year contract extension, carrying a $5.83 million cap hit through the 2029-30 season. Knight is entering the final year of his current deal with a $4.5 million AAV.

“After joining the team in March, Spencer quickly cemented himself as a crucial piece of our future,” said Blackhawks General Manager Kyle Davidson. “A talented, young goaltender, he brings athleticism, sound positioning and a calm demeanor to his game, and we’re excited to watch Spencer continue to flourish in Chicago over the next four seasons.”

Knight, 24, was acquired from the Florida Panthers on March 1st, 2025, as part of the Seth Jones trade. The 2019 13th overall pick immediately stepped into the starting role for the Blackhawks between the pipes, and in his team debut on March 3rd, he stopped 41 of 42 shots in a 5-1 win against the Los Angeles Kings.

The 6-foot-3, 191-pound goaltender played in 15 games with the Blackhawks last season after being traded, going 5-8-3 with a 3.18 GAA and .893 Sv%. In 95 career NHL games between Chicago and Florida, Knight has a sturdy 49-33-9 record with a 2.83 GAA, .904 Sv%, and five shutouts.

When the Calgary Flames signed goaltender Dustin Wolf to a long-term extension earlier this week, I wrote about how the deal laid a blueprint for Knight’s next contract with the Blackhawks. Well, turns out that GM Kyle Davidson wanted to get a deal done sooner than expected, leading to the two sides agreeing on a three-year bridge deal instead of a long-term contract.

Given that Knight is still somewhat unproven as a No. 1 NHL goaltender, as the 38 appearances he made last season were a new career-high, it makes sense at this point for the Blackhawks to go with a short-term deal. There’s still plenty to learn about Knight, which is why I originally believed a contract extension would come after or during the 2025-26 campaign.

Regardless, the Blackhawks have now tied down Knight at a team-friendly price until the summer of 2030. Knight joins Alex Vlasic and Frank Nazar as key core pieces that have signed extensions under Davidson. Next up — Connor Bedard. Likely coming next summer, but I thought the same for Knight.
