With just one week to go before they open the preseason, the Philadelphia Flyers made a trade to open up some cap space and add a draft pick on Sunday.
Flyers Trade Clears Salary Cap Space
According to Sportsnet NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the club has traded goaltender Ivan Fedotov to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 draft. The moves clear $3.25 million of cap space for Philadelphia.
Fedotov, 28, played in 26 total games last year for Philadelphia, with a 6-13-4 record, a 3.15 goals-against average, and a .880 save percentage in his first full season in the NHL.
He came over to Philadelphia from CSKA in Moscow at the end of the 2023-24 season, playing in three games that season for the Flyers.
Goaltending Outlook with Ersson and Vladar
Philadelphia has Sam Ersson as its starting netminder, with veteran Dan Vladar signed to back him up. Ersson played in 47 games last season, dealing with injuries, with a 3.14 GAA, .883 save percentage, and a 22-17-5 record.
Impact of Vladar Backing Up Ersson
The Flyers are hoping to get more consistency from the position with Vladar replacing Fedotov. Vladar played in 30 games with a 2.80 GAA, .898 save percentage, and a 12-11-6 record for Calgary.
Flyers Preseason and Season Openers
The Flyers open their seven-game preseason slate on Sunday, September 21, against the New York Islanders. They will open the regular season on Thursday, October 9th, against the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers.
