Friday’s rookie series showdown between the Flyers and Rangers prospects was a thrilling bout. It was entertaining hockey at the very least. Saturday was not such.
The Flyers would fall 5-2 to the Rangers, ending the rookie series in a split. Here’s what happened for the Philly.
To start, the Flyers’ lineup looked a little different Saturday night. After a great showing on Friday night, the Flyers have Denver Barkey the night off. He is going to be heading to training camp, so the maintenance makes sense. It also likely explains why we never saw Oliver Bonk.
With that, Flyers 2025 7th rounder Nathan Quinn drew into the lineup, along with 2024 7th rounder Austin Moline, who drew in for Andre Mondoux. Both players made their rookie series debut. Joey Costanzo, at camp on an ATO, made his debut, coming in for the second half of the game.
The Flyers’ first goal of the night came from Ethan Samson, who ripped one from the left-side dot. Nikita Grebenkin picked up the primary assist on the tally while Moline earned the secondary, giving him a point in his very first rookie series game.
Later in the second period, Grebenkin does a great job turning a loose puck in the neutral zone into a scoring chance. He found Alexis Gendron, who scored for the second time in as many games.
Grebinkin earned the primary assist on the only two Flyers goals from Saturday. It was an impressive night for the prospect, especially when there was not much of anything else going on.
The prospects will return to Voorhees, with a day off on Sunday, and rookie camp resuming on Monday.
