Sunday, Sept. 14, was a day for college field hockey in Vermont. Both the University of Vermont and Middlebury College field hockey teams picked up convincing wins, where they piled up the goals against each of their opponents. At Moulton Winder Field, UVM dominated from start to finish, leading to an 8-0 victory over Merrimack College. Their eight goals were one goal short of tying a single-game team record of nine goals they scored against UMBC back in 2005. “I think the scoring is so important,” said UVM field hockey head coach Kate Pfeifer. “To get some of these players’ experience in different positions and different people working together on the forward line, and just creating some great plays on the counter. It’s just great to see some things that we can rely on, hopefully down the stretch.”Maddie Priestly got the scoring going in the first quarter, less than five minutes into the contest. Vermont then followed up Priestly’s goal with four more in the second quarter. Veerle Nijhuis scored two of those goals while Addie Delorefice and Isi McMahon chipped in with a goal apiece. In the second half, Alicia Battistelli tallied two more goals of her own while Consu De Castro added another. The dominant victory marks Vermont’s fourth straight win. The Catamounts say they are picking up the pace at the right time after their last loss, coming against a ranked Rutgers University squad on Sunday, Aug. 31. “Yeah, a ton of momentum as we move into October,” Priestly said. “That’s kind of the grind time with conference play. I have no doubt in my mind that we’ll go as far as we did last year. This is a really special group to do it.”A ranked battle ensued at Peter Kohn Field in Middlebury, where it was the No. 1 Panthers who proved why they belong as the top team in NCAA Division III field hockey after their 5-1 win over the No. 3 Babson Beavers. It was a career outing for Megan Fuqua. She not only set a single-game career high with four goals in the Middlebury victory but also became the first Panther in two years to have four goals in a single contest. Sarah Bona also added a goal of her own in the first half, while Clair McMichael dished out three assists. See the highlights for both games in the video above.
