Former WHL Player and Member of Famed Hockey Family Tragically Passes Away at Just 25 Years Old

A former Western Hockey League player who was getting set for his first season in the ECHL has sadly passed away this weekend at the age of 25.

The month of September has been a tough one for hockey fans as while leagues across North America is set to get underway in a matter weeks, we’ve sadly lost a couple of people who left a lasting impact on the National Hockey League including former Montreal Canadiens netminder Ken Dryden.

Today, the hockey world is in mourning once again as a former Western Hockey League player, who was getting set for his third year in professional hockey, has sadly passed away this past weekend.

Former WHLer Orca Wiesblatt passes away at the age of 25

In a post on their social media accounts, the Athens Rock Lobsters of the Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL) announced that former Calgary Hitmen forward Orca Wiesblatt – brother of Nashville Predators prospects Oasiz & Ozzy Wiesblatt – has passed away.”We are heartbroken to share the passing of former Rock Lobster, Orca Wiesblatt. Orca will always be remembered for his energy, toughness, and infectious smile. Once a Rock Lobster, forever a Rock Lobster. ❤️🦞

Our thoughts are with the Wiesblatt family and all who loved him.” the Rock Lobsters said.

This summer, Wiesblatt signed with the ECHL’s Allen Americans, making the jump to the third level of professional hockey and the league released a statement on his passing, sharing that the forward sadly passed away in an automobile accident in British Columbia.

“The ECHL and its member teams mourn the loss and express their condolences to the family and friends of Orca Wiesblatt, who passed away in an automobile accident over the weekend at the age of 25.” the ECHL said.

Allen Americans Head Coach and General Manager Steve Martinson said that himself and the organization are heartbroken with the passing of Orca Wiesblatt.

“We are all heartbroken. Orca (Wiesblatt) was really looking forward to this next step in his hockey career. He wasn’t just skilled, he was a momentum changing hitter. I can still see his grin when he would return to the bench after one of his big hits. That is what we will miss the most, his infectious smile.” Martinson said.
