An encouraging update was given on Sunday night regarding Vancouver Canucks top prospect Braeden Cootes after he left Saturday’s Rookie Game against Seattle.
The Vancouver Canucks wrapped up their Prospects Showcase games on Sunday with a win over the Seattle Kraken, with both clubs picking up a victory over the weekend.
After the game, Manny Malhotra told reporters that Cootes leaving the game was for precautionary reasons and that the club would reevaluate him on Sunday.””Manny Malhotra says that it was partly ‘precautionary reasons’ that the #Canucks removed Braeden Cootes from Saturday night’s game.
“We’ll reevaluate him and see how he feels tomorrow,” Malhotra added.”

Following Sunday’s win, Thomas Drance of The Athletic shared that the Vancouver Canucks expect forward Braeden Cootes to be ready to go for the start of training camp, which opens up on Thursday in Penticton, British Columbia.
“#Canucks say forward Braeden Cootes was held out on Sunday for precautionary reasons. He’s expected to be available when training camp opens next week in Penticton.” Drance said on X.
Cootes, a native of Sherwood Park, Alberta, was Vancouver’s was Vancouver’s first round pick back in June, with many believing that he’ll become one of the steals of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft in the years to come, if he ends up developing into a legit top-six forward.
The 18-year-old is coming off a solid year with the Western Hockey League’s Seattle Thunderbirds, finishing his first year as the team’s captain with 63 points (26 goals, 37 assists) in 60 games, along with eight points in six games during the playoffs.
It’s great to see that Cootes isn’t dealing with anything major and hopefully, Vancouver Canucks fans will be able to see him suit up for at least one preseason game this month, potentially even their first contest which is on Sunday in Seattle.
