WASHINGTON (AP/7News) — The Washington Capitals put assistant coach Mitch Love on leave pending the results of an investigation by the National Hockey League (NHL).

The Capitals announced the move Sunday and said they would have no further comment until the league’s investigation is complete.

A source with the NHL told ESPN that the league received a letter with allegations relating to Love’s personal conduct while the 41-year-old had been interviewing with teams in the offseason. The allegations were of actions before his time with the Capitals.

He had been interviewing with several teams and was considered a finalist for vacant positions with the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins, per ESPN.

Before coming to the Capitals in June 2023, Love was head coach of the Calgary Wranglers of the AHL in 2022-23. He has worked with Washington’s defensemen.

In 2022-23, Love received the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award as the AHL’s outstanding coach for the second consecutive season.
