The New York Rangers have named J.T. Miller as the 29th captain in franchise history.

Miller returned to the Rangers, who he spent the first six seasons of his career with, in a trade from the Vancouver Canucks last season. New York sent Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini and a 2025 first-round back to Vancouver in the deal, with Erik Brannstrom and Jackson Dorrington also going back the other way.

“We’re pleased to announce J.T. Miller as the new captain of the New York Rangers,” general manager Chris Drury said in a release. “Since his arrival last season, J.T. immediately became a leader for our group and exemplifies how we want to conduct ourselves both on and off the ice. Congratulations to J.T. and his entire family on an incredibly meaningful achievement and we’re confident he will continue to represent our organization with class, commitment, and integrity.”

Miller’s time in Vancouver came to an end amid a rift with teammate Elias Pettersson. He had spent six seasons with the team prior to the trade.

The 32-year-old centre posted 22 goals and 70 points in 72 games between the two teams last season. He also went without a point while playing in all four games with Team USA at the 4 Nations Face-Off.
