Steve Yzerman on expectations for 2025-26 Detroit Red Wings, playoffs

Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman, Sept. 17, 2025.

Training camp 2025 hasn’t even begun, and already the Detroit Red Wings are dealing with an injury to a key player.

General manager Steve Yzerman said Wednesday, Sept. 17, defenseman Simon Edvinsson is dealing with a lower-body injury that will sideline him through camp, which runs through Sept. 21, and into the exhibition season.

Edvinssson should be ready by Oct. 9, when the Wings open the 2025-26 regular season at home against the Montreal Canadiens.

“We’ll have him ready to go sometime around the start of the regular season,” Yzerman said.

Edvinsson, 22, had 31 points and a plus-12 rating in 78 games last season while averaging around 21 minutes per game, third-most on the team. He averaged around 90 seconds per game killing penalties.

Coach Todd McLellan and the Wings have a good handle on Edvinsson’s skill set, so there’s limited damage as far as figuring out where he fits in. His absence opens room for McLellan to get more looks at newcomers Travis Hamonic and Jacob Bernard-Docker, who are competing for spots in the top six defensive rotation.

The Wings open camp Thursday, Sept. 18, in Traverse City.
