The Calgary Flames signed captain Mikael Backlund to a two-year, $6.5 million contract extension on Wednesday that kicks in for the start of the 2026-27 season.

Backlund, 36, had 15 goals and 32 points in 76 games last season.

He has played his entire 1,066-game NHL career in Calgary since being drafted 24th overall by the team in 2007.

On Oct. 30, 2024, Backlund played his 1,000th NHL game. In 2023, he was named the 21st captain in Flames franchise history.

He won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2023 for his humanitarian efforts.

Internationally, he has represented Sweden on a number of occasions, including five times at the World Championships, winning gold in 2018. He has also suited up at the World Juniors and World Cup of Hockey.

He is in the final season of a two-year, $9 million contract and was set to become an unrestricted free agent.

In 1,066 career NHL games, the Vasteras, Sweden native has scored 215 goals with 563 points.
