CRANBERRY — Penguins forward Kevin Hayes suffered an upper-body injury Thursday when defenseman Ryan Graves delivered a hard hit, sending Hayes into the boards during a battle drill on Day 1 of the Penguins’ training camp.
New coach Dan Muse made a point to emphasize competition and physicality Thursday. The players enjoyed themselves and liked the energy of the intense drills and said so following each of the group practices.
Hayes’s injury happened on Rink 2 at the UPMC Lemieux Complex, so Hayes had a long, slow walk to the locker room, which was on the other side of the building. PHN observed that he walked slowly around Rink 1, appearing to get some support, as well.
Muse said Hayes was being evaluated for an upper-body injury.
