Vancouver Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko is gearing up for what he hopes to be a bounce back season after dealing with injury issues for a good chunk of last year.
2024 and the early part of 2025 were very difficult for Vancouver Canucks star netminder Thatcher Demko due to injuries he’s sustained, including one to his knee during the first round of the playoffs 16 months ago against the Nashville Predators.

During a recent interview with Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre, Thatcher Demko opened up on the difficulties he faced with his knee injury and shared how he’s feeling after a being able to train with no restrictions this past summer.
Demko told MacIntyre that he is happy to be entering the season healthy and believes he is in a good spot as he enters his seventh full campaign as a Vancouver Canuck.
“Yeah, we got to work pretty much right away. I missed enough time last year that I didn’t feel like I was really needing that much time off. You know, trying to explain what I was going through last year (with the popliteus injury), I can’t really do justice to it. It’s just such a breath of fresh air to be able to come into a season healthy, with a very clear mindset as far as what I needed to do, and having the freedom to go out and do it. It’s been about five months of a really detailed and disciplined approach to get me in a good spot to be ready to go this year.” Demko said.
The San Diego California native also shared that he spent time this summer working on his mental health as well because of last season’s difficulties by not being able to play for significant chunks of the 2024-25 campaign.
Demko said that he started to question and get worried about different things in life and with his hockey career, but he was able to slow things down a bit and believes he’s in a better place now, especially with his confidence.
“This summer, just as much work as I was putting in in the gym, I was putting the same amount of work into the mental side of things, too,» he explained. «Last year was difficult and, you know, I’m a human being. You naturally just start to question things and you start getting worried about different things and different facets of your life. Being able to really slow down and have another child and have some perspective again, slowly start to feel like myself again, that confidence just kind of came hand in hand.” Demko said.
