After Flyers 2025 training camp opened on Thursday, the action continued into Friday.

Thursday’s groups and lines gave us a sort of look into what this Flyers team could look like in just a few weeks. Head coach Rick Tocchet talked about the concept of forward pairs during his availability on Thursday. Some of the headlines

Here are the groups from Friday’s practice.

Injury Update

For the second straight day, Oliver Bonk is not at Flyers training camp. While there were not particularly high chances of him making the roster out of camp, it’s looking like the odds are getting lower and lower with each day.

Tyson Foerster participated in the full skate on Friday but remained in a non-contact jersey. Foerster had said on Thursday that he expects to be in a regular jersey at some point this week.

Karsen Dorwart missed the second day of Flyers camp. Dorwart took a big hit into the boards from Owen Tippett early during the first session of Thursday’s skate. He continued on for a bit after the hit but did not come back out for the second. Matthew Gard took his place in Group C. Dorwart is now listed as day-to-day.

Also, Jett Luchanko says he is at 100%. In his media availability on Friday, Luchanko said that he is at full health and that being held out of rookie camp was purely precautionary. Luchanko is a full go.

Group C

Group C’s skate was not too noteworthy. Like Thursday, the first group out for the Flyers was their AHL camp. There were a few things to pick up on. For starters, Nathan Quinn had a very good day. He probably stood out the most. Of course, you had AHL vets like Zayde Wisdom (yes, I am calling him a vet), Garrett Wilson, and Cooper Marody testing some of the Flyers’ young bucks.

Lines were never run during AHL camp; instead, it was primarily one-on-one and two-on-two drills.

Group B

Deslauriers-Cates-Brink
Gendron-Luchanko-Tippett
Barkey-Dvorak-Foerster
Richard-Gard-Tuomaala

York-Grans
Zamula-Andrae
McDonald-Juulsen
Ginnnig-Samson

Ersson
Bjarnason

On day two of camp, Group B of the Flyers hit the ice before Group A. In Thursday’s action, there were only really two consistent lines, as the rest were shaken up a bit. It took until Friday to fully realize, but that was due to Karsen Dorwart’s absence. On Friday, we did see some consistency with the lines during the work.

Owen Tippett and Jett Luchanko remained paired, with Alexis Gendron playing the opposite wing of Tippett. Nic Deslauriers played the left wing alongside Noah Cates and Bobby Brink. The rest of the lines seemed to be just seeing what certain players can do.

The first thing I noticed was that Matthew Gard held his own. He was pulled up in Dorwart’s absence, along with Oscar Eklind, to Group B. While Eklind did not work into lines, Gard did, and he did not look too bad. Gard will not be a player in consideration for the roster, but he looked good skating with some NHL guys.

For that top line of Gendron, Luchanko, and Tippett, they all looked great again. Gendron is having a fantastic camp. I went into this week thinking that he would not last too long at NHL camp, but he is certainly earning himself an extended look. Gendron’s shot was dialed, he is keeping pace with Tippett and Luchanko, and has been exciting to watch.

Regarding the defensemen, Cam York is a name to keep an eye on. Rick Tocchet said he really likes what he has seen from York so far in camp. Hunter McDonald could also be playing himself into a long look as well, especially with Bonk still out.

Group A

Bump-Zegras-Konecny
Grebenkin-Couturier-Michkov
Pederson-Nesbitt-Hathaway
Kaplan-Abols-Gaucher

Seeler-Drysdale
Gilbert-Sanheim
Gill-Moline
Murchison-Vlooswyk

Vladar
Kolosov

Like Group B, Group A kept some of its interesting lines together. The trio of Alex Bump, Trevor Zegras, and Travis Konecny has looked really good together in camp, and could be the line to watch in the Flyers’ top six this season, especially if Tocchet opts to keep the Cates line from last season together.

Nikita Grebenkin is continuing to impress. He, alongside Matvei Michkov, has been very fun. Michkov is playing like his usual self and has been a great playmaker for Grebenkin. There was a specific moment where Michkov was able to stand firm with some pushing and shoving against the much larger McDonald. He hung with the play and eventually set Grebenkin up for the easy finish.

It also seems like the Flyers want to see Travis Sanheim with an NHL partner. He was paired with Spencer Gill on Thursday, but was on the right of Dennis Gilbert on Friday. Tocchet had said he liked both Sanheim and York together, but also thinks both are strong enough to lead their own pair. Maybe Tocchet is seeing what he has with Gilbert for this season.

First Round of Cutdowns

After Friday’s session, the Flyers have made their first official roster cutdowns of training camp.

Goaltender Joey Costanzo (OHL, Windsor), defenseman Austin Moline (USHL, Madison), and forward Nathan Quinn (QMJHL, Quebec) have been reassigned to their junior clubs. That brings the Flyers to 55 players on their camp roster.

Costanzo is an unsigned player who was on a camp deal. Moline is a 2024 Flyers’ 7th-round draft selection, and Quinn is a 2025 7th-round draft selection. The three players are the first to be reassigned from the Flyers camp.

Play will pick back up on Saturday, with a brief skate at 10:30 a.m., followed by a scrimmage at 11:20 a.m. at the Flyers Training Center. The non-scrimmage players will skate following the game.
