5×5:

Philly’s offensive production was almost identical to the prior season. The Flyers scored one more goal in 2024-25 compared to the prior season. Management brought in Trevor Zegras and Christian Dvorak this offseason after moving on from Joel Farabee, Morgan Frost and Scott Laughton. In addition, the hope is that change in coach from John Tortorella to Rick Tocchet results in an improvement as well.

After some signs of progress defensively in 2024-25, Philly surrendered 25 more goals last season that the prior campaign. Carter Hart was on the no-roster list all last season with Samuel Ersson showing signs during the year he could be a #1 netminder. Dan Vladar was signed for two years to provide veteran depth in net supporting Ersson along with Aleksei Kolosov.

The Flyers skill players, for the most part, don’t stack up to many other teams in the league. One significant exception is Matvei Michkov, who ridiculously slipped to seventh overall in the 2023 draft. Michkov was everything Philly could have wanted and more. He led the team with 26 goals, adding 37 assists, with 17 of his points coming on the man-advantage. Opposite him on the top line will be Travis Konecny, who registered new career-best marks in assists (52) and points (76), leading the team in both categories. The third member of the line is likely to be Sean Couturier, who ended the year strong with 13 points (five goals, eight assists) over the last 13 games

Once you get past the top line, the remainder of the lineup comes with significant questions. Tyson Foerster tallied 25 goals and 43 points, up from 20 and 33 the prior season. His consistency left a lot to be desired, but he closed the year strong with nine goals and 13 points in 12 outings. Owen Tippett saw his output fall from 53 to 43 points, including a decline in goal scoring. Trevor Zegras needed a reset and gets it moving back to the East Coast and Philly.

The Philly defense has a few intriguing pieces. Travis Sanheim is likely the teams’ best overall defenseman, but his production tailed off this past year. Jamie Drysdale, the sixth overall pick in 2020, has yet to live up to his draft status. He skated in his first full season since 2021-22 last year, giving some hope that he can build off that this season. Beyond those two, offensive is not expected.

PP

Philly’s power play is ugly; there is no other word for it. The team finished 30th in the league last season after dead last finishes the prior three years. Michkov certainly uplifted the talent base but even his presence was not enough. If Drysdale can take over as the PP QB, the Flyers will have a solid shot from the point.

Zegras has the skill to help be creative on the man-advantage while Tippett would be the needed net-front presence. Konecny led the team with eight markers on the man-advantage. Couturier and Foerster will lead the second unit. Sanheim will slide down a unit to run this man advantage.

The penalty kill took a massive step backwards, dropping from fourth in league as 83.4 per cent, fourth in the league, to 77.6 and 20th. A new system will probably be in place this season. Special teams is not a strength.
