Alex Ovechkin leads the Washington Capitals in NHL preseason action against the Boston Bruins on Sunday.

Hockey is finally back with a full day of NHL preseason action on Sunday. One of the most exciting games of the day is a matchup of two of the best goal scorers in the game. Alex Ovechkin leads the Washington Capitals in his 21st season. The all-time leading goal scorer in NHL history is coming off his 14th season of at least 40 goals, finishing third in the NHL. That was also the 12th season for Ovechkin as a top-three goal scorer in the NHL. Washington takes on the Boston Bruins in their first preseason game. David Pastrnak leads Boston in his 12th season, where he finished seventh in assists, fifth in goals, and third in total points.

Washington made the playoffs in Ovechkin’s history-making season. They lost in the second round in five games to the Carolina Panthers. Boston is coming off a last place finish in the Atlantic Division and missed the playoffs for the first time in eight seasons.

That rough season netted Boston the seventh overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. The team used that on standout center James Hagens. 

Hagens played for Boston College last season, finishing second on the team in assists (26) and third in points (37) in 37 games. He was named to the Hockey All-East Rookie Team. Washington selected left wing Lynden Lakovic with the 27th overall pick.
