‘You Gotta Go Somewhere Else’: Friedman Hints at Crosby Trade

NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman appeared to hint at the growing potential of a trade of Sidney Crosby from the Pittsburgh Penguins, even though his 1st preference is to remain with the team. There’s no denying that the chances of the Pittsburgh Penguins going back to the playoffs for the 1st time since 2022 in 2025-26 are very low, meaning that their chances of another Stanley Cup any time soon are even lower.
For Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, it presents a unique problem. Crosby is known for his fierce loyalty to the Penguins, and even signed a 2 year extension last year to keep him under contract through 2027, knowing full well that the team wasn’t going to realistically compete for a Stanley Cup.
But Crosby does want to hoist the Cup at least once more before he retires, and it’s just not going to be in Pittsburgh. Per NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman, Crosby may have to accept a difficult trade from his only NHL home if he wants another shot at a ring.
His first choice is to be a Penguin forever; people around him…have tried to say to him, if the team keeps missing the playoffs you gotta go somewhere else.

The Trade Dealine is once again in March – will Crosby still be with Pittsburgh by then?
Sidney Crosby is no fan of tanking
Even though some have speculated that the strategy of Penguins GM Kyle Dubas could be to tank the season to maximize their chances of winning the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery, Crosby openly said he wants no part of that.If you’re one of those people that believe that, then you’re entitled to believe in that, but that’s not why I signed up to play the game and that’s not the game that I know.
-Sidney Crosby
Crosby is a dedicated professional and naturally, the thought of not trying to win is the complete opposite of his competitive mindset.
