MOORHEAD — Moorhead Spuds boys hockey standout Mason Kraft is headed west.

Kraft was picked up by the Wenatachee Wild of the Western Hockey League, the team announced Thursday, May 8.

His acquisition came as part of a trade between the Victoria Royals for a 2026 fourth-round draft pick and 2027 third-round pick. The WHL is one of three leagues that make up the Canadian Hockey League.

The Mr. Hockey recipient led the Spuds last season with 95 points on 46 goals and 49 assists in 31 games. Kraft notched 68 goals and 105 assists in his three-year career with Moorhead.

Kraft was a difference maker in Moorhead’s first boys hockey state championship in March. He tallied nine goals and 11 assists to lead all scorers in the state tournament.

Moorhead finished the season 28-2-1.

Following the state tournament, Kraft joined the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the USHL. He had one goal for RoughRiders in 10 games.

The WHL concluded its U.S. priority draft on Thursday for 2010-born players. Moorhead had six players from its Bantam AA team selected and Grand Forks had one player picked.

In November, the NCAA Division I Council voted to allow CHL players to compete in NCAA Hockey starting on Aug. 1. CHL were deemed ineligible prior to the decision due to the NCAA’s amateurism policy.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
