Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Joseph Woll is taking a leave of absence from the team to attend to a “personal family matter,” the Maple Leafs announced on Tuesday.
General manager Brad Treliving said there is no timeline for when Woll will return to the team.
The 27-year-old American is set to enter his fourth season in the NHL after posting a 27-14-1 record alongside a 2.73 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage over a career-high 42 games in 2024-25.
Woll appeared in seven playoff games last spring, going 3-4 with a 3.56 goals-against average and a .886 save percentage.
Woll, who is expected to share the net with Anthony Stolarz again this season, has been battling an illness during the early portion of training camp.
Selected by the Maple Leafs in the third-round of the 2016 NHL Draft, Woll begins a new three-year, $10.98 million contract, featuring an average annual value of $3.66 million, in 2025-26.
Toronto will dress Dennis Hildeby and Artur Akhtyamov as their goaltenders for Tuesday’s preseason game against the Ottawa Senators.
Forward Max Domi was absent from training camp Tuesday to attend his grandfather’s funeral.
