Fans of the many NHL teams generate optimism if their team looks good. Championship windows open for various amounts of years with differing results. The Dallas Stars have high hopes of winning a Stanley Cup every year. Their home-grown talent alongside exceptional trading set them up for this run at success. The Stars’ championship window opened in 2020. They’ve almost reached a Stanley Cup title during that time. Another season begins soon, but just how long will their window remain open?

Home Grown Talent

Drafting quality talent is a quality that Jim Nill excels in. Mike Modano is the last draft pick this organization selected 1st overall in 1988. This draft pick success stems from finding talent in draft picks that are not so high. Miro Heiskanen is the highest draft pick since the team moved to Dallas at 3rd overall. Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz are 2nd Round picks. These two are in the same neighborhood of late 1st Round picks like Thomas Harley and Jake Oettinger. These players are cementing themselves as the foundational core of this team, with their contracts proving so.

Trades

Mikko Rantanen will soon start his first full season with the team after becoming a playoff hero. Another blockbuster trade brought Tyler Seguin to Dallas 12 years ago. The Stars are in a serious cap crunch starting this season. The possibility of losing Jason Robertson is high, as the Stars cannot currently afford an extension. Jim Nill will cross that bridge when he gets there.

Their window will not close soon. They have a mix of being in win-now mode along with an ample selection of prospects to pass the torch to. Winning a championship over the next five years is a highly possible outcome. Being competitive past the five year mark is also something this team is suited for.

Teams dream about a Stanley Cup Final appearance and four Western Conference Final appearances in six seasons. It’s clear the Stars are not going away soon, cementing a run for years to come. The current Stars will continue to hold a spot in the conversation for quite some time. The championship window remains open with the chance of securing a title for at least the next five years.
