Bourque Family Foundation To Host 4th Annual Captain’s Ball In Boston

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Late Ice Bucket Challenge co-creator Pete Frates will be honored at the 4th annual Captain’s Ball in Boston Thursday.

The event will be hosted by the Bourque Family Foundation, which is led by former professional hockey player Ray Bourque. Bourque played for the Boston Bruins from 1979 to 2000.

“This event is a big one for us,” Bourque said. “It’s been great. I played 22 years with the Bruins and I learned pretty early that it’s really important to get involved in [the] community and give back.”

Part of the proceeds from the event will go to the Pete Frates Foundation, which is named after the former Boston College baseball captain who died in 2019 after a years-long battle with ALS. According to its website, the foundation has helped raise $220 million for ALS research through the viral Ice Bucket Challenge.

The 4th annual Captain’s Ball is at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Boston University’s Agganis Arena. The event will feature auctions, live music, food and more. Attendees must purchase tickets here.

off the side of his business this past Labor Day weekend. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The mural depicted a futuristic rendering of Central Square. Its neon paint covered much of the arcade’s exterior wall. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>"We spent so much time working with the artist to curate this specifically for Central Square," owner Sean Hope said. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Dx Arcade opened on Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge in February. Hope said the timing of the theft was particularly disheartening because the business is still growing. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>"The students are back, so this is really our time to interact with a whole new customer base," Hope said. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The mural had received some criticism because the artist used artificial intelligence in its creation, but Hope said he was blindsided by the theft nonetheless. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>"I really thought if someone didn’t like it, they might just spray paint a tag on it," Hope said. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>There still haven’t been any arrests connected to the theft, but Cambridge police are investigating. agreement with MassDOT. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>"After three months of good faith negotiations, Applegreen and MassDOT have not reached agreement on definitive terms for the redevelopment of 18 motorway service areas in Massachusetts," Applegreen said. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Applegreen also cited legal costs as a contributing factor to their termination of their lease discussions with MassDOT, due to ramps up its presence in Boston and surrounding areas in Massachusetts, the organization continues to try to obtain more agents to increase their numbers.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Similar ads have been running in other sanctuary and Democrat-led states asking local police to join their deportation efforts.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The messaging of some ads mention sanctuary cities, stating that they are "ordered to stand down, while dangerous illegals walk free," with others referencing to local police officers that they "took an oath to protect and serve."\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Many members of the public along with state officials have expressed concern over how ICE has handled the detainment of immigrants along with the demographic of the persons they have targeted and taken into custody.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>According to the Associated Press, The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit on Sept. 4 against Mayor Michelle Wu, the city of Boston, and its police department over its sanctuary city policies. They claimed the city is interfering with immigration enforcement.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the increased deportation efforts of ICE would focus on "the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens," living in Massachusetts. She stated in a press release, obtained by the AP, that "sanctuary policies like those pushed by Mayor Wu not only attract and harbor criminals but protect them at the peril of law-abiding American citizens."\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed some of these concerns while speaking about ICE’s presence in the area.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>"What I’m hearing day after day is stories from people saying that they witnessed ICE agents removing a landscaper, a construction worker, a nanny, a grandmother who’s a home health aide. It’s one thing if they’re going to be targeting criminals but when you’re taking 16-year-olds off the street on their way to school, or on their way to practice with no record that is not what we thought we were getting, and I think that’s why people are really outraged," Healey said.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>These arrests of non-criminals have been called "collateral arrests," by ICE.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>ICE launched an operation called "Patriot 2.0" in Massachusetts during the earlier half of Sept. this year, coming with an increase of deportation efforts and ICE agent presence in Boston.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The recruitment ads come with mixed reviews from the public, leaving some residents concerned and others in support of their message.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>One local resident said, "it’s good in a way that it stops illegal immigration and stops alien migrants from being here," and another said, "yeah it’s great, safer streets for Americans."\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Elizabeth, an Arlington resident said, "I have not seen the ad, but I’ve heard of it, and I think it’s horrible. early Wednesday morning in Beacon Hill, according to Boston Police Superintendent Paul McLaughlin.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>McLaughin said it happened just after 6 a.m. at 97 Mount Vernon St., the site of restaurant 1928 Beacon Hill. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Police were responding to reports of a breaking and entering in progress. When officers arrived, they found a nude man in an alley armed with a large knife, according to McLaughlin. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>An officer tried to tase the man, but when that failed, officers fired at the man multiple times, McLaughlin said. The man was immediately given first aid by the officers on scene until EMT’s arrived, and was then taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>McLaughlin said the officers involved were also taken to the hospital for evaluation. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Police are asking anyone in the area who has information about the incident to contact the homicide unit at 617-343-4470 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-494-TIPS.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>McLaughlin said the man’s motive in unclear at this time. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>1928 Beacon Hill posted on its Instagram Wednesday morning that the restaurant will be closed this evening after an incident occurred during off-hours. other color of the rainbow in collaboration with the City of Boston’s upcoming art installation Color Flows on Winter Street. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Winter Street in Downtown Crossing will be transformed during the installation, which will run for six weeks throughout the fall and will feature art, food trucks, interactive events and cultural programming. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>For the installation, Grullón is currently working on a floor mural that will stretch the length of Winter Street in an effort that the city hopes will make pedestrian areas more engaging. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“The type of work I do its very nostalgic and very interactive,” said Grullón. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Grullón is no stranger to large city appointed murals as she previously created one for the city of Cambridge last year. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“I’ve done this type of floor mural piece before and the piece that I did before its in Kendall Common and it’s called ‘Rollerama’, it’s basically a roller-skating rink kind of similar to this type of idea,” said Grullón. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\”https://www.instagram.com/p/DA_elsiOU3Y/?img_index=2\” target=\”_blank\”>‘Rollerama’\u003c/a> was a 7,000-square-foot mural that allowed pedestrians to roller-skate along its multiple different blue colored curves. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>In terms of this upcoming mural, Grullón hopes to finish it in a week as each section takes around three to four days to paint, then it can then be viewed and interacted with by the public. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“As it stretches the entire street people can walk on it, they can roller-skate and like interweave with the design however they feel like it,” said Grullón. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The mural will feature various vibrant colors and the signature curves that frequent her works.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>When asked how it’s been to create such a large mural in an open and busy environment such as Winter Street Center. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>This comes after a family of swans in Boston recently crossed the Jamaicaway parkway to settle Jamica Pond located across the street. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The entire family made it to the pond except for one young member named Sola. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The Boston Parks and Recreation Department noticed the abandoned swan and kept close watch on it hoping that the parents would return for their child.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>However, the parents did not return, and this is when the New England Wildlife Center stepped in to help the stranded youngster. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“The smallest cygnet got left behind,” said New England Wildlife Center’s CEO Zak Mertz.  \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>New England Wildlife Center then tried to gently relocate the swan back to its family but were met with some mixed results.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“[It was] a big happy reunion, they accepted the cygnet back and for two days they went about their business, and we thought all was well until unfortunately some folks noticed that one of the siblings was sort of picking on the young swan, pecking at it,” said Mertz.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Shortly after this the parents began to cast Sola away from the rest of the family and only focused on the stronger sibling cygnets.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Solo once more, Sola’s health appeared to decline as he stopped eating. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>After this, Sola was taken to the New England Wildlife Center’s hospital in Weymouth where its team ran diagnostics on the swan and rehabilitated him.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The Wildlife Center plans to return the swan to the wild eventually as it is common for young swans to leave their parents and go off on their own during the fall season. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“Our goal here was not to subvert nature, but to try to understand what is going on, see if there was a remedy for it and just give this swan the best fighting chance we can to Maura Healey has been applying a full-court press to pass a $400 million bill aimed at strengthening Massachusetts’ research and innovation economy, but lawmakers have left the governor’s plans for a "transformative investment" idling in the seven weeks since Healey proposed it.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Healey’s Discovery, Research and Innovation for a Vibrant Economy (DRIVE) bill aims to attract private investment and preserve research jobs. With federal funding drying up for hospitals and higher education institutions, the administration argues the state must step in to maintain its competitive edge.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>After filing the legislation (\u003ca href=\”https://malegislature.gov/Bills/194/H4375\” target=\”_blank\”>H 4375\u003c/a>) on July 31, just as lawmakers were departing Beacon Hill for a weeks-long summer recess, Healey held a press conference at UMass Memorial Health in Worcester this month about the "incredibly important piece of legislation." Last week, she convened the first meeting of her high-powered DRIVE Acceleration Team task force led by the state Federal Funds and Infrastructure Director Quentin Palfrey. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Asked in Worcester about when she wants the legislation back to her desk, Healey said, "As soon as possible. I mean, we need this to happen. We need this to happen now."\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>"This is a top priority for me," Healey told reporters at the State House last week after a meeting of the \u003ca href=\”https://www.mass.gov/news/governor-healey-announces-drive-acceleration-team-members-to-advance-research-and-discovery-in-massachusetts\” target=\”_blank\”>task force\u003c/a>, whose members constitute a collective who’s who of top business, health care and higher education officials including former Centers for Disease Control Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>While Healey has been publicly promoting her plan, the bill has not been scheduled for its legislative debut: a public hearing before the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“It is a bill that will be scheduled, I do not have a date yet,” said Rep. Carole Fiola, the House chair of the committee. Fiola noted the bill arrived in August, adding, "We have a schedule of bills right now."\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Fiola said the administration reached out to her in mid-September, and they’re planning to meet in the coming weeks to discuss the proposal. She emphasized that bills already scheduled for hearings will take precedence.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>"I guess there’s been quite a bit of publicity trying to be generated about it, but I think we’re going to follow the process that we do as a Legislature," she said.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Healey says the DRIVE bill is critically important at a time when the Trump administration is defunding medical research — vital for both health care and the state’s economy.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>"This isn’t just about filling gaps left by what has been devastating cuts at the federal level. This is actually about designing something that will continue to be a catalytic engine for our state," Healey said at the press conference in Worcester. "The federal administration is not helping us right now, because they don’t understand the value of science, the value of research, because they’ve continued to defund medical research right now and do other things that undermine public health, in my view. But in Massachusetts, we’re going to move forward."\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Healey created the task force with an Aug. 1 executive order and during their first meeting she urged the group to "move this forward and get this both passed, and also, importantly, implemented, operationalized, as quickly as possible. Time is of the essence."\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Sen. Barry Finegold, the other chair of the committee who controls the fate of the DRIVE bill, seemed to share some of the governor’s urgency.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>"We are very much looking forward to the hearing coming up and learning more about the bill, with everything happening on the federal level we need to be on the offensive as a state," he said in a statement to the News Service.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Fiola said she understands research and life sciences are big economic engines for the state, and needs to learn more about the bill.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>"Let’s take a breath and understand just what the numbers are. Where is the need? What is the best way to approach it? That is how we deliberatively work as a body," she said. "There are a lot of important pressing needs: energy costs, all these federal implications of federal cutbacks. So we’re looking at all of it."\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The committee is holding a hearing on about a dozen bills Thursday, but Healey’s bill is not on the agenda.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Reps. Jeff Roy and Ann-Margaret Ferrante were present at last week’s DRIVE Initiative meeting. Healey acknowledged Finegold’s absence but noted his support. So I’ll stay.’"\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>AIM sent a letter on Sept. 8 to Senate President Karen Spilka, House Speaker Ron Mariano, Senate Ways and Means Committee Chair Michael Rodrigues and House Ways and Means Committee Chair Aaron Michlewitz urging passage of the bill.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The letter, signed by Thomson, highlighted the broader economic impact: "Every dollar invested in research yields more than twice that amount in economic benefits. That claim led to a manhunt targeting Black men and boys. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>It later came to light that Charles Stuart was actually responsible for the murder. Charles Stuart went on to commit suicide by jumping off the Tobin Bridge. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>$100,000 is going to Bennett. $50,000 is going to Swanson. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>This is one of multiple steps Boston has taken to atone for its handling of the case.
